Cheap and effective. Check a reuse center in a major city close to you. Also check things like craigslist for builders leftover or unused materials (in this case windows) I use Google Reader and then setup and RSS feed to the craigslist materials feed in my area. Then whenever I'm looking for something I go to the RSS Feed and search using the Google search in the Reader for say "windows" and I get a list of people in my area trying to get rid of windows.
Double check on the person selling you things... Ask them questions until you feel comfortable with them, and most important, ALWAYS take 1 or 2 buddies along with you when you go to meet/check out the materials. It's always good to have extra hands to help you, it's even better to have extra minds thinking about the problem your trying to solve, and there is safety in numbers
