Carolina Performing Arts will present the National Theatre of Scotland?s critically acclaimed production of The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, created by David Greig and directed by Wils Wilson, on Sept. 16-20 in the Top of the Hill Restaurant & Brewery Back Bar in downtown Chapel Hill, NC. The National Theatre of Scotland previously performed Black Watch by Gregory Burke on Feb. 9-13, 2011 in the backstage area of Memorial Hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
According to Carolina Performing Arts:
?Conceived as an evening of ?anarchic theater, live music and strange goings-on,? [The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart] explores the politics and romance played out at an academic conference devoted to the border ballads ? the traditional folklore songs celebrating the raids, feuds, seductions and elopements between the Scottish and English border.
?Staged at Top of the Hill Back Bar [in Chapel Hill], this play both investigates and imitates its subject, telling old tales with distinctly modern overtones in classic ballad rhymes.
?In the depths of Midwinter?s Eve, all the conference attendees are snowed into the town?s one pub, and the devil is at play as the pagan celebration takes hold. Prudencia must choose between the traditions she yearns for or the world of her peers.?
The National Theatre of Scotland invites Triangle theatergoers to:
?Pull up a chair and whet your whistle for an evening of anarchic theatre, live music and strange goings-on?
?Following a sell-out run at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe and a Scottish tour, where it received glowing reviews and was nominated in four categories for 2011 CATS Awards, The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart returns for a worldwide tour in 2012 and beyond.
?The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart takes theater into pubs and other unlikely venues, where stories are told, re-told, sung and passed on.
?So, now is the time to share a lock-in with the National Theatre of Scotland?s company of actors and musicians. Indulge in an evening of supernatural storytelling, music and theatre inspired by the Border Ballads, Robert Burns, and the poems of Robert Service.
The Scotsman of Edinburgh?s critic called The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart ?More vibrantly alive than any piece of theatre I?ve seen in Scotland for years?; and The Herald of Glasgow, Scotland raved, ?You shouldn?t miss this show for the world ?. [It is] rambunctiously life-affirming and touchingly beautiful.?
