A Push To Make Gasoline Engines More Efficient

The auto industry has work ahead to meet ambitious fuel efficiency goals of 55 miles per gallon by 2025 ? nearly twice the current average required. Hybrid and electric cars will play a role, but the plain old internal combustion engine can't be overlooked.

Gasoline-Powered Cars Dominate

Automakers recently agreed to a new fuel economy initiative proposed by the Obama administration that will double Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards to a fleetwide average of 54.5 mpg by 2025. Hybrid and electric cars can potentially help automakers meet that goal. But the vast majority of consumers currently purchase vehicles that operate on gasoline, diesel, ethanol and other fuel sources.

To find out where the new technology is being developed to make more gas engines more efficient, I went on a tour of an engine lab with professor Anna Stefanopoulou, director of the Automotive Research Center at the University of Michigan. I was expecting cams and pistons, but she first showed me computers screens.

"It's hard to see, since a lot of the work we do is not necessarily only hardware [but] software," Stefanopoulou says. "If you really need to meet the [55 mpg standard] and to do it cost-effectively, you have to do it sometimes through strategy."

Eventually Stefanopoulou and I wound up looking at one of the dozen engines that they test here. She says they test it once a week, sometimes once a day.

"We don't run durability tests here: We run tests to model the engine and then be able to understand what's going on with running different fuels," she says.

This particular engine can run on a variety of fuels, and Stefanopoulou and her students are working to perfect every part and function in the engine. You can now put computers or even tiny crystals right into an engine.

"[It] can monitor in real time what's happening inside the cylinder, and [communicate] this to a mathematical formula, that ... says, 'Now I want you to be a little bit to the left, a little bit to the right, when it comes to [picking] the pressure.' " Stefanopoulou explains.

The Fuel Cost Of 'Creature Comforts'

The researchers don't just work on engines but also with how drivers perceive the driving, with the help of psychologists and statisticians. Stefanopoulou and her colleagues say the barriers to getting to 55 mpg aren't scientific.

"When we talk about 55 mpg, we had that technology, criminy, 20 years ago," says Margaret Wooldridge, who's also a professor at the University of Michigan in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. She says there's a but ? in this case, the car driver.

"Like when was the last time you actually took your hand and rolled down a window?" she asks. "But now there's an expectation that every vehicle, even if it's an entry-level vehicle, will have that kind of creature comfort [power windows]."

Wooldridge says we expect our cars to heat faster in winter, to cool faster in summer, have seat warmers and be able to plug in two cell phones, maybe a DVD player and ? of course ? a radio.

"I personally owned a vehicle that had over 45 mpg fuel economy when I was in college," Wooldridge says. "And it had a manual transmission, manual windows; it was a great car, [it] lasted forever. It was light-weight, kind of chilly to heat in the winter and all that good stuff."

Wooldridge says all those extras can reduce the fuel economy by up to 50 percent ? and that it's a fat chance people are going to give up plugging in their cell phones or running the air conditioner or cranking NPR.

"Expecting people to make good choices at a cost premium isn't going to work," she says. "So if we're trying to effect positive change, if we're trying to change behaviors and change emissions and things like that, you're not going to get people to do that unless you can do it cost competitively."

Wooldridge says there are many regular inexpensive gas-powered cars that get more than 40 miles a gallon. The real race is to do that with all kinds of cars, from the showy luxury cars to economy cars.

"You need it all, you have to have it all," she says. "You're not going to get there exclusively on one engine technology or one powertrain technology. You need to have a variety of powertrain technologies. So hybrids have a role to play, they absolutely do. Electric vehicles have a role to play."

Wooldridge says that regular gas engines are going to be on the road for quite some time to come, and that the science exists to make cars vastly more fuel efficient.

The limits, she says, are cost and our desire to get there.

Penn State players lived by special rules: ex-official (Reuters)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa (Reuters) ? Penn State University football players received special treatment compared to other students when accused of violating school rules, the school's ex-chief disciplinarian said on Tuesday.

Longtime football coach Joe Paterno and then-university President Graham Spanier were involved in years of debate that ended in changing the rules for how football players were disciplined, said Vicky Triponey, the vice president for student affairs from 2003 to 2007.

"The consequence of these accommodations put us in the position of treating football players more favorably than other students accused of violating the community standards as defined by the student code of conduct," Triponey said in a statement e-mailed to Reuters on Tuesday.

Her comments dealt another blow to a university and once-storied football program now reeling from allegations of child sexual abuse against a former assistance coach and an alleged cover-up.

Former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky faces 40 counts of sexually molesting boys over a 15-year period. He was charged by a grand jury on November 5 and has denied any wrongdoing.

The case has stunned the prestigious university, the state of Pennsylvania and the world of college athletics, spawning a host of investigations as well as soul-searching among athletes, coaches, donors, parents and college officials.

Paterno, 84, the winningest coach in major college football, and Spanier were fired by trustees this month for failing to tell police about the allegations of sex abuse. The former athletic director and a top finance official face perjury charges in the case.

The scandal has raised concerns that a culture of special treatment for the football program under Paterno allowed Sandusky's alleged conduct to continue for years.

Spanier and Paterno made "suggestions, requests and at times demands" to change the process or soften punishment for players who had broken rules, said Triponey, who now heads special projects for a non-profit in Charleston, South Carolina.

A university spokesman was not immediately available to comment.

NEW CASES?

In a sign that the charges against Sandusky could expand, the Harrisburg Patriot-News reported that the state's Office for Chidren, Youth and Families had opened two cases of alleged child abuse against Sandusky.

The cases were reported less than 60 days ago and are still in the initial stages of investigation, the newspaper said.

If the cases are found to be credible, they would be the first known ones to be reported since Sandusky's arrest that involve current children, the Patriot-News said.

Spokesmen for the Department of Public Welfare and for the Pennsylvania attorney general's office declined to comment.

Sandusky's lawyer, Joe Amendola, told ABC News on Tuesday that he expected more charges could be filed against his client after the storm of publicity surrounding the case.

"My concern is if they bring new charges based upon new people coming forth, that bail's going to be set, and he's going to wind up in jail," he said.

COURT DATE CHANGED

Sandusky's preliminary hearing in Center County court was also moved back on Tuesday to December 13 from December 6, and the court's website cited "logistical needs" for the delay.

An avalanche of media is expected for the hearing in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.

In a move related to the legal case, all of Center County's Court of Common Pleas judges recused themselves from the Sandusky trial, the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania courts said in a statement.

The recusals were aimed at avoiding any appearance of conflict of interest regarding Penn State, Sandusky or The Second Mile, the local charity Sandusky founded, it said.

Sandusky is alleged to have met all his victims through the charity, which he founded in 1977.

McKean County Senior Judge John Cleland, a former chairman of the Interbranch Commission on Juvenile Justice, will take over the case.

The December 13 preliminary hearing will be handled by an out-of-county jurist, Westmoreland County Senior District Judge Robert Scott. He replaced the district judge who set bail when Sandusky was arrested, Leslie Dutchcot of State College, who had ties to The Second Mile.

Also on Tuesday, the Penn State Nittany Lions' interim head coach, Tom Bradley, said he doubted talk that the football team could be kept out of a post-season bowl game this year because of the Sandusky scandal.

"I have not heard that from anybody," he told a news conference, adding that Penn State's acting President Rodney Erickson "has talked to people; that's not the case."

Featuring a 5.7” XGA format (1024 x 768 pixels) mirasol display with 223 ppi, the Kyobo e-reader will be powered by a Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon S2 class processor using Android 2.3 with a custom UI in place.

The Kyobo e-reader will be available at bookstore locations across South Korea, including Kyobo’s flagship Gwanghwamun-jum location in Seoul, for a retail price of KRW349,000 (US$310).

We're guessing we won't ever see the device in the North America but it sure would be nice to see some manufacturers pick up the display for use on devices we can get our hands on. Why the Bush and Blair Convictions Will Not Be Recognized (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | In what's considered by most to be little more than symbolism, former U.S. President George W. Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair have been convicted of war crimes by a Malaysian court for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The "Kuala Lumpur Foundation to Criminalise War" [sic] charged that both men knowingly ordered the invasion of Iraq, under a false pretext of former dictator Saddam Hussein having stockpiled weapons of mass destruction.

Part of the Malaysian court's ruling stated that both men forged documents intended to support their claims and that during the invasion more than a million Iraqi citizens were killed. The 5-panel war crimes tribunal took a mere four days to come to their verdict. The Malaysian judges also expressed their desire the two leaders names be listed on the war criminal's register, under the Rome Statute.

While most Americans will refuse to accept the convictions as legitimate, even the most staunch conservative must find President Bush joking about the missing WMD, during a Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner in 2007, in bad taste. How he found humor over the topic, which so many soldiers gave their lives for is beyond comprehension. Bad taste? Yes, but criminal? We'd have to let a fair trial work that out.

Neither Bush or Blair will face any sort of imprisonment for their actions here in America or in the United Kingdom, especially when we consider that neither man was present at the trial and allowed to defend themselves. The very idea of a conviction "in absentia" is offensive to civilized people. Even those 24 men serving under Adolf Hitler, whom the Nuremberg Trials convicted of war crimes, were allowed to offer up a defense before the international court. I'm no fan of George Bush or Tony Blair. But I am a huge supporter of the idea of fair trials.

Malaysia seems to be posturing, but for what purpose? What exactly would the goal be in making such a gesture? Will their tin horn justice system be recognized by anyone outside of their nation? It's not likely. It's hard to imagine the U.S. or the U.K. respecting this conviction.

If former President Bush and former PM Blair have any charges to answer to, let those charges be made in a court where the two men have a chance to offer a defense. It's the least anyone else would deserve.

Ice mummy may have smashed eye in fall

A sharp incision in his right eye may have contributed to the rapid demise of ?tzi the Iceman, the famous mummy who died in the Italian Alps more than 5,000 years ago.

Twenty years after two hikers stumbled upon the Iceman in a melting glacier, new analyses have revealed that a deep cut likely led to heavy bleeding in the man's eye. In the cold, high-altitude conditions where he was found, that kind of injury would have been tough to recover from.

The official opinion remains that an arrow in his left shoulder was the cause of death for ?tzi. But the new study raises the possibility ? for some, at least ? that he fell over after being shot by an arrow. And, at higher than 10,000 feet in elevation, his alpine fall may have made the situation much worse.

"Maybe he fell down or maybe he had a fight up there, nobody knows," said Wolfgang Recheis, a physicist in the radiology department at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. "With this cut alone, at 3,250 meters, it would have been a deadly wound up there. Bleeding to death in the late afternoon when it was getting cold up there, this could be really dangerous."

Ever since his discovery in 1991, ?tzi has been measured, photographed, X-rayed, CT-scanned and endlessly speculated about. The Iceman Photoscan website allows anyone to scrutinize every inch of the body, which belonged to a 5-foot-3-inch, 110-pound, 45-year old man.

Ten years ago, researchers found a flint arrowhead buried in ?tzi's left shoulder blade inside a 0.8-inch-wide hole. They concluded that the arrow pierced a major artery and killed him within minutes. At a conference in September, experts reaffirmed that assessment.

But in one of the latest studies, Recheis used the most advanced CT-scanning technology available to take a closer look at ?tzi's right eye. Earlier examinations had shown a crack in the skull in that spot. The new work revealed a deep incision in the same place.

Scans also revealed iron crystals around the right eye and forehead, which produce a bluish hue. And since the region's rocks are naturally low in iron, Recheis and colleagues suspect the iron is a sign of a hematoma, or massive bleeding outside of the blood vessels. A biopsy is needed for confirmation.

Despite the officially stated opinion on ?tzi's cause of death, Recheis is not convinced that the arrow wound was deadly on its own.

"My South Tyrolean colleagues say the arrow most probably hit the sub-clavicular artery or other vital vessel and thus the Iceman died," Recheis said. "But there are doubts. It's justified that the arrow did not hit any vital vessels or nerves as far as we can say from the data we have."

"This could be the first thing," he added. "He was up there and shot by an arrow. And then he fell down, cut his eye and bled to death."

Albert Zink, head of the EURAC Institute for Mummies and the Iceman in Bolzano, Italy, was surprised and perplexed to hear of these new claims. At a conference this fall, he said, a whole table-full of experts discussed the evidence and unanimously agreed that the arrow killed the Iceman.

The shoulder wound, he said, was clearly fresh and bleeding heavily when ?tzi died.

"It is impossible that he walked around or that this was an old injury because this was a very severe injury," Zink said. "If you don't have the possibility to do surgery, you cannot survive from this for longer than 10 or 15 minutes."

The eye injury could have happened from a fall after ?tzi was shot or from a blow to the head by his attacker. But whatever the cause, Zink is sure that it was secondary to the arrow strike.

"It's true that there might be new evidence that there was a little crack in the skin, so maybe he was bleeding from skull trauma," he added. "But it doesn't change anything in the end."

According to some news reports, the new findings could support a theory that ?tzi was the victim of a mountaineering accident. Both Recheis and Zink agreed that this was unlikely. Based on his muscle strength and patterns of joint degeneration, the Iceman was a fit and experienced climber. And he was near an easy path when he died.

Failed Russian space mission shows difficulty of exploring Mars

The Phobos-Grunt?spacecraft launched from Russia this week destined for Mars has yet to leave Earth orbit ? and looks increasingly likely to tumble back to Earth with its full tanks of toxic fuel.

The craft, Phobos-Grunt (Phobos Soil), was to have traveled to Mars' moon Phobos to gather and return to Earth samples of the moon's soil and rocks. But once the craft reached Earth orbit, motors in the rocket stage that would have set Phobos-Grunt on its path to the red planet failed to ignite.

Engineers with Roscomsos, the Russian Federation Space Agency, have tried to communicate with the craft in hopes of igniting the motors before changes to the orbits of Earth and Mars close the window of opportunity over the next few days.

But according to updates on the website RussianSpaceWeb.com, all attempts have failed so far. If efforts to send the mission on its way fail, the craft ? brimming with a load of toxic fuel in tanks that potentially could survive reentry ? could reenter Earth's atmosphere at the end of the month.

Russia's travails serve as a fresh reminder that space exploration is hard.

"That's why it's called rocket science," says Ralph McNutt, chief scientist at the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md., and the project scientist for NASA's Messenger mission, whose spacecraft currently is orbiting Mercury.

It's a point not lost on Mars-mission planners at NASA, who are preparing to launch the $2.5-billion Mars Science Laboratory Nov. 25.

Phobos-Grunt and the Mars Science Laboratory represent the most ambitious Mars-exploration missions to date for their respective space agencies.

The lab is a 1-ton rover loaded with instruments to analyze Martian rocks and soil within a vast feature dubbed Gale Crater. Although the rover isn't designed to hunt for life, it will be hunting for organic compounds that would help determine whether the planet had conditions that could have supported life.

In one sense, the world's space agencies have a success rate at the Mars-mission plate that major-league ball players would envy. Since 1960, when the then-Soviet Union launched the first mission to the red planet, which failed, 35 launches by four nations have amassed a .329 average, based on NASA's tabulation of international Mars launches.

But that average masks a wide disparity in success rates among the four.

With the apparent failure of Phobos-Grunt, Russia is 0 for 17 attempts since 1960 at a mix of Mars flybys, orbiters, and landers.

Japan, which launched a Mars orbiter in 1998, is 0 for 1. Europe, with its inaugural Mars Express/Beagle 2 orbiter-lander combo, is 0.5 for 1 at the red planet. Launched in 2003, the duo reached Mars. The orbiter has been a science success, and its mission has been extended to 2014. But the lander was declared lost after repeated attempts to contact it failed following its December 2003 descent to the surface.

NASA, meanwhile, has enjoyed 11 successful Mars missions out of 16 launched since 1964, including flybys, orbiters, and rovers.

It's easy to get used to those successes, but they are far from assured.

Designing craft for interplanetary travel means tailoring its systems to function for years in an environment far different from the conditions craft encounter in Earth orbit, where designers have far more experience, Dr. McNutt says.

Flitting between Earth and anywhere else exposes a craft and its sensitive electronics to the potentially disruptive effects of cosmic rays.

Pick your destination and you will encounter much different contrasts in temperatures the craft must endure, compared with conditions at Earth. Think the Voyager spacecraft at the far edges of the solar system versus the Messenger mission orbiting Mercury.

Indeed, the combination of the vacuum of space and temperature can be a mission-ender, he says, citing NASA's Mariner 3 mission as an example.

Launched in 1964, it was the US's first attempt at a Mars flyby. But the craft ultimately failed, felled by the combined effects of vacuum and temperature ? something for which it was not tested prior to launch. Engineers conducted vacuum and temperature tests separately.

The failure led to the development of test chambers that could replicate both conditions simultaneously, McNutt says.
