Mauti determined to keep Nittany Lions upbeat

CHICAGO (AP) ? Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti said Friday he knows of only two or three players who are planning to leave the Nittany Lions following the severe sanctions imposed earlier this week by the NCAA.

Speaking at Big Ten media day, the senior said the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal isn't the players' fault, but added it's a situation they must deal with. One way he sees to do that is go out and play inspired football under first-year coach Bill O'Brien.

"We didn't want to be in this position," Mauti said. "At the same time we're not going to let anybody tear this program apart."

Mauti did not say specifically who he thought would leave. Asked about star tailback Silas Redd, Mauti says the two have talked and he hopes Redd will make the right decision.

"I spoke with him and his dad. I lived with Silas for a year and a half. Silas and I are very close and I talked to him," Mauti said. "I just hope Silas makes the right decision for him and for the right reasons."

Redd was a second-team All-Big Ten selection last year, when he ran for 1,241 yards in an offense without a star quarterback.

Mauti also made it clear that he didn't appreciate the presence of Illinois coaches in State College this week, even though he acknowledged they were not breaking any rules by being there. Penn State players, under the NCAA sanctions announced Monday, can transfer without sitting out a season.

"They weren't hounding me personally. But I know for a fact they reached out to our players," Mauti said.

"I don't want to make this a feuding thing. But at the same time, if you're from our conference and you're going to try and steal our players and then wish us well, then I got a serious problem with that."

New Illinois coach Tim Beckman said Thursday that his coaches were not on campus but at establishments in State College where they were available to talk to players about their desire to leave.

"Don't get me wrong. He's not breaking any rules because there are no rules," Mauti said. "It's been set up right now for our team to just fall apart ... piece by piece and guys just go everywhere they want because that door is open."

But Matui said that's not going to happen, even though the Nittany Lions are banned from bowl games the next four years.

"Somebody leaves, it's their decision, a big decision," he said. "We'll wish them well. We're not going to worry about those guys when we put the pads on."

Nittany Lions guard John Urschel, who earned a math degree in just three years, said he's been contacted about leaving, but wouldn't disclose who was interested. He said a lot of players have been contacted by a lot of schools.

"Everyone's getting calls. We've got some really good players on our team. We're all just trying to stick together," he said. "Coming out of high school, I didn't get much attention or get many offers. I believe I owe it to Penn State to stay here and finish my career. I'm in 100 percent. Penn State has been too good to me."

Defensive tackle Jordan Hill said he never gave a thought to leaving.

"Nah," he said.

And being cast as the team who has to play after the imposition of sanctions is not what the team is dwelling on with fall camp starting early next month.

"What matters to us is how we fought through it. For us, that's all we'll ever think about," Hill said. "We'll get together when we're old guys and we're not going to talk about the sanctions and how bad that was, we're going to talk about how we fought through it and how we went out there and kicked people's butts."

Matsui said he'd read the Freeh report and didn't want to elaborate on its findings.

"No one (current player) had anything to do with that, but yeah we're paying the consequences and that's OK," he said. "That's the situation we're in. ... We're looking to create a new legacy here, something special."

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney's support for Israel will likely earn the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a warm welcome from Israeli leaders when he visits on Sunday ? and a frosty reception from Palestinians, who fear he would do little to advance their stalled statehood dreams.

Romney is visiting Israel as part of a three-nation foreign tour that includes Britain and Poland. He hopes it will boost his credentials to direct U.S. national security and diplomacy.

The visit to Israel comes at a time when its leaders are weighing a military attack on Iran, the neighboring regime in Syria is looking increasingly shaky and Mideast peace talks are going nowhere.

Romney, a longtime friend of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is expected to play up his critique of President Barack Obama's posture toward the Jewish state and his handling of Iran's suspected nuclear weapons ambitions.

Israeli political scientist Abraham Diskin says Romney can expect an "enthusiastic" reception, both because of his solid record of pro-Israel comments ? and because he's not Obama.

"What interests Israelis is Israel," Diskin said. "Romney has a very pro-Israel stance. He is very suspicious of the Arab world. (Israelis) are very suspicious of Obama."

In an effort to upstage Romney a day before he landed in Israel, the White House announced it was signing legislation expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel.

Still, with polls showing a close race, Romney hopes this showcase for his pro-Israel stance will help him to woo votes from traditionally Democratic Jewish voters and evangelical Christians who zealously defend Israeli government policy. Obama has not visited Israel since he became president.

Romney already has stumbled in his first international swing as presidential contender by suggesting that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC News, he called London's problems with games preparation "disconcerting," and the remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials.

In Israel, Romney will be meeting with Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, President Shimon Peres and Israeli opposition leaders.

He will not see Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Abbas aide Nimr Hamad said, though he will be sitting down with the Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, in Jerusalem. Neither the Romney nor Abbas camps would explain why a meeting with Abbas was not on the agenda.

Romney's relationship with the U.S.-educated Netanyahu dates back decades, when they briefly overlapped in the 1970s at Boston Consulting Group, and the two men share conservative outlooks. A Romney bankroller, Sheldon Adelson, is financing a free Israeli newspaper that reflects Netanyahu's views.

Netanyahu has refused to endorse either presidential candidate, although his ties with Obama have been fraught.

"I will receive Mitt Romney with the same openness that I received another presidential candidate, then-Senator Barack Obama, when he came almost four years ago, almost the same time in the campaign, to Israel," he said when asked about the visit last Sunday on Fox News. "We extend bipartisan hospitality to both Democrats and Republicans."

Romney ? like most politicians who make the trek to Israel ? is likely to face questions such as whether he would endorse calls by some fellow Republicans to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and his stance on Israeli calls for Washington to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Romney has consistently accused Obama of putting too much pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians and of being too weak on Iran. He says he wants to present a clearer military threat to the Islamic Republic, with a stronger naval presence in the Gulf. Tehran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons.

At a war veterans' convention in Nevada this week, Romney accused Obama of being "fond of lecturing Israel's leaders."

"He has undermined their position, which was tough enough as it was," Romney said. The "people of Israel deserve better than what they have received from the leader of the free world."

Obama rejects the criticism and points to unprecedented security cooperation with the Jewish state.

Three years after he came into office with Israeli-Palestinian peace at the top of his foreign policy priorities, Obama recently acknowledged that his efforts there have failed. Peace talks have been deadlocked more than three years.

Obama, who tried to persuade the Arab world that he was an honest broker, lost the Palestinians' trust by refusing to follow up tough talk with action when Israel defied his call to halt settlement construction on occupied land Palestinians seek for a future state.

The Palestinian leadership in the West Bank has refused to resume negotiations without a settlement construction freeze and went ahead with a statehood campaign at the United Nations, over the president's objections.

Palestinians fear Romney would be softer on Israel than Obama. Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi said that would doom any chance for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and establishing a Palestinian state on lands Israel captured in the 1967 war.

"American foreign policy in the region is shaped by Israel and determined by what's good for Israel, and not even what's good for the U.S.," Ashrawi complained.

Romney "will probably try to take it a notch higher," she said, and if the U.S. refuses to put any pressure on Israel, "then there's no chance for peace."

Obama's tense relations with Netanyahu have created the perception that U.S.-Israeli relations have deteriorated. During one of Netanyahu's White House visits, Obama extended none of the trappings, like a joint news conference, usually accorded to an important ally.

LONDON (AP) ? Michelle Obama played a little tennis with kids, handed out some hugs and posed for photos with strapping athletes Friday as she formally began her stint leading the U.S. Olympics delegation.

The U.S. first lady told a crowd of young people that the Summer Games are about more than just gold medals ? but also urged U.S. athletes in London to strive to claim top prizes all the same.

"Try to have fun. Try to breathe a little bit," Mrs. Obama told American athletes at a breakfast in east London near the Olympic Park.

Obama, who said she was "just in awe" of their company, told the athletes that some of her fondest sports memories stemmed from watching the Olympics on television. She shared the story of her father, who was athletic but contracted multiple sclerosis "in the prime of his life."

"He retained his love of sports, truly," Mrs. Obama said. "And the Olympics was a special time for him to watch amazing athletes of all abilities compete on the world stage."

Among the Olympians attending were two-time fencing gold medalist Mariel Zagunis, who will carry the nation's flag into the opening ceremony, along with the U.S. women's basketball team and track and field members.

"Being here is otherworldly for me," the first lady said. "I am still so inspired."

Later, she was scheduled to attend a reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace and then go to the London Olympics opening ceremony.

On the vast lawn of Winfield House, the residence of the U.S. ambassador to Britain, Mrs. Obama also joined some 1,000 children ? many from U.S. military families based in Britain and others from underprivileged London neighborhoods ? at a sports carnival.

"I'm so excited," Mrs. Obama told the children as a marching band played the University of Florida fight song.

The first lady shared the stage with a host of sports stars, including England's ex-soccer captain David Beckham and U.S. gold medal winners Carl Lewis, Summer Sanders and Brandi Chastain.

Mrs. Obama told the children to draw encouragement from athletes like gymnast Shawn Johnson ? who once considered quitting ? and from Paralympian Gabe Diaz de Leon, an army veteran who trained to compete in the discus, shot put and javelin after he was paralyzed on operations in Honduras.

"The stories of these athletes remind us that being an Olympian is not just about winning a gold or setting a record. It's about pushing yourself and believing in yourself and refusing to give up," she told the children. "No matter what obstacles you face, keep pushing."

Mrs. Obama later tried out a host of sports alongside the children.

Lewis praised the first lady's "Let's Move!" campaign, which is aimed at tackling childhood obesity and promoting sports.

"She has proven and shown that both she and the president love the Olympics and the Olympic movement," the ex-sprinter said.

While Lewis and other athletes signed autographs, ex-NBA All Star Dikembe Mutombo offered the children tips on basketball. Ex-Manchester United players Peter Schmeichel and Denis Law ran a soccer clinic and members of the U.S. field hockey and tennis squads also ran training sessions.

Ethen Duval, originally from Oklahoma, said was looking forward to the Olympic soccer tournament.

"I can't wait to watch things with my Dad and see the look on his face when something exciting happens and he says 'Wow!'" said the 10-year-old, who lives at Lakenheath U.S. Air Force Base in Britain.

The 46-year-old Mutombo towered above his young pupils.

"They are mostly excited about the basketball (at the Olympics)," he joked.

On Saturday, Mrs. Obama will meet with Samantha Cameron, the wife of British Prime Minister David Cameron, before watching U.S. athletes on the first full day of Olympic competition. She will see more events Sunday before departing.

Other first ladies who have led recent U.S. Olympic delegations include Hillary Clinton at Lillehammer in 1994 and Laura Bush at Turin in 2006.

Club Drug Ecstasy Harms Memory, Study Reveals

Recreational use of the club drug Ecstasy could cause memory problems, new research finds.

The research is the first study of Ecstasy users before they begin to use the drug regularly, which helps rule out alternative causes for the memory loss, said study leader Daniel Wagner, a psychologist at the University of Cologne in Germany.

"By measuring the cognitive function of people with no history of Ecstasy use and, one year later, identifying those who had used Ecstasy at least 10 times and remeasuring their performance, we have been able to start isolating the precise cognitive effects of this drug," Wagner told LiveScience.

Ecstasy, or MDMA (shorthand for its tongue-twister of a chemical name, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is a popular drug often taken at raves or techno clubs. In Europe, researchers estimate that about 5.6 percent of 15- to 34-year-olds have used the drug at some point. In the United States, about 5.7 percent of people have used Ecstasy at some point, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. [Trippy Tales: The History of 8 Hallucinogens]

Dangers of Ecstasy

The effects of the drug have been tough to pin down, however. Animal studies suggest that MDMA degrades the ends of brain cells that use the neurotransmitter serotonin to communicate. Studies in humans have hinted that Ecstasy use can harm memory and learning, but that research has been plagued with confounding variables such as other drug use or pre-existing differences between Ecstasy users and nonusers.

In 2009, the debate over Ecstasy's effects claimed the job of David Nutt, a psychologist who once chaired the U.K. Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. The British government fired Nutt from that position after he said that LSD, cannabis and Ecstasy were not as harmful as other drugs, including alcohol.

Wagner and his colleagues focused their study on new users of Ecstasy. To qualify, people had to have some experience with the drug ? making it more likely that they'd use it in the future ? but could not have taken more than five pills in their lifetimes.

Of 149 participants who qualified, 109 returned 12 months later for a series of psychological tests, many focusing on memory. Of these, 43 participants used no other drugs other than MDMA and marijuana (there are very few Ecstasy users who don't also use marijuana, the researchers wrote), and 23 had used more than 10 pills in the past year. It was this group that the researchers compared with nonusers.

Memory and Ecstasy

Among Ecstasy users, the researchers found a deterioration in a memory task called paired associates learning, in which people memorize pairs of words or objects so that the presentation of one triggers the recall of the other. None of the other cognitive tasks showed significant differences between users and nonusers, Wagner said. The specificity of the deficit suggests damage to the hippocampus, he said, the part of the brain that is crucial for memory formation and recall. [10 Ways to Keep Your Mind Sharp]

"Whether the impairments are permanent or reversible has yet to be investigated," Wagner said.

The impact of the findings on future drug policy is also unclear.

"Given the specific memory impairments, our findings may raise concerns in regard to MDMA use, even in recreational amounts over a relatively short time period," Wagner said. "On the other hand, we did not find any impairment on other cognitive domains, and we didn't focus on other relevant domains like psychopathology or social problems."

The researchers, who detail their findings online today (July 25) in the journal Addiction, plan a two-year follow-up study to investigate other effects of the drug.

Pentagon chief says website to list award winners

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says a new Pentagon website will list the names of those Americans who have earned the Medal of Honor since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Panetta made the announcement Wednesday at a House hearing. He said the website could be expanded to include other recipients of military valor awards and medals.

The move is in response to a Supreme Court ruling last month. The court invalidated a law that made it a crime to lie about receiving the Medal of Honor and other military decorations. The justices ruled that the Stolen Valor Act of 2006 infringed upon free speech.

Panetta said he hoped the website will protect the honor of those who served in battle.

Telephony, internet services and cable TV group (TSE:RCI, NYSE:RCI) reported second quarter adjusted operating profits slightly above market consensus, supported by what the company called ?exceptionally strong margins? in both the wireless and cable businesses.

For the three months to end-June 2012, Rogers made adjusted operating profit of C$1.276 billion, or 91 cents a share, beating the market consensus of 86 cents for the period.

The figures compared to C$1.244 billion, or 86 cents, a year earlier.

Revenues rose slightly year-on-year to C$3.106 billion from C$3.097 billion.

Wireless data revenue grew by 13 percent and it added a net 87,000 postpaid subscribes, helping drive wireless data revenue to now comprise 39 percent? of Wireless network revenue compared to 35 percent in the same quarter last year.

Wireless activated 629,000 smartphones in the quarter, of which approximately 36 perecent were new subscribers.

This resulted in subscribers with smartphones, who typically generate ARPU (average revenue per user) nearly twice that of voice only subscribers, representing 63 percent of the overall postpaid subscriber base as at June 30, up from 48 percent at the same time last year, the company added.

People are social animals. Otherwise we wouldn't have built things like cities, time shares, and Facebook. As long as there's been human history, we have operated in large groups. We owe our very survival to the power of groups. However, there are plenty of us who feel uncomfortable in groups. There's nothing that terrifies us worse that walking alone into a room of strangers. The good news is that there are some things you can do to make this not only easier, but fun and enjoyable. When that happens, you'll realize how much other people have to offer, and how much they can enrich our lives.

Having a head filled with interesting topics is the easiest way to get over your anxiety. Many people are afraid of being put on the spot, and not having anything to say. Make up a list of your hobbies, interests, and keep up on current events. That way you'll have a lot more to contribute to the conversation. Don't be afraid to express your opinion. People want to hear it.

It's also a good idea to get an idea of the friends you'd like to make at these gatherings. That way you won't be walking up to every single person and trying to start off a conversation. You'll either come across as a desperate creep or some kind of politician running for office. Just single out a few people who seem interesting, and then talk to them. Don't worry about what other people think.

One problem many people have is making a conversation seem natural, and not forced. The easiest way is to simply ask other people open ended questions. Then listen to their answer, and ask them any follow up questions about things you are interested in. Some of the greatest conversationalists never talk much. They just ask questions, and are generally interested in other people's answers.

A good way to introduce yourself is to say your name, why you are that the event you're at, and what you do for a living. Then relax and let people ask you any questions they want. If they don't, then ask them some things about their jobs, what they do in their free time, and just listen to their answer. Just relax and let the conversation flow wherever it wants to flow.

Of course, you shouldn't talk about anything related to politics, religion, people's ages, or how much they weigh. This is just asking for trouble. It's also always a good idea to be a little self depreciating. It helps other people feel more at ease.

If you keep these tips in mind, and practice them whenever you can, you'll be well on your way to becoming a relaxed, social operator. You'll soon look forward to social events, and all the interesting people you'll meet there.
