State offers free fishing for the weekend, Delta promotes sport fishing

School may be out for the summer, but kids and parents are getting a few lessons about the great outdoors at the Outdoor Heritage Festival in Delta.

The event took place on Saturday and focused on outdoor sports and recreation, learning and fun. It was hosted by the City of Delta Parks and Recreation. The festival kicked off with a free fishing derby for kids.

Event director Diane Sales says the purpose of the event is to showcase all of the state's natural offerings and how to enjoy them safely.

"We are Colorado people and this is an incredible state, and to teach our kids to be safe out of doors whether they are in their own backyard or if they venture further,? Sales said.

The Colorado Sportsman's Wildlife fund sponsored "The Pathway to Fishing" event. It gave free fishing poles to kids twelve and under who completed the five fishing stations. This was the county's third annual Outdoor Heritage day.

If those fishers are feeling confident about what they learned, they can head on out to one of Colorado?s 2,000 lakes, ponds and reservoirs for some free fishing.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is inviting everyone to participate in the state's annual free fishing weekend going on Saturday and Sunday.

If you're looking to throw out a line, you won?t need a valid fishing license. Other regulations are in effect, including bag and possession limits and certain baits. You can consult the 2012 Colorado Fishing Brochure for more information.
