NEW YORK (AP) - A California man has pleaded guilty in a New York court to trying to sell for $200,000 a 19th-century baseball glove he falsely claimed belonged to Babe Ruth.
Irving Scheib entered the plea to a count of wire fraud in federal court in Manhattan on Thursday.
The government says the Bonsall, Calif., resident bought the glove on eBay for $750 in January. It says he then claimed the late "Father Knows Best" actor Robert Young had gotten the glove.
The government says Scheib is married to one of the actor's granddaughters.
Prosecutors say a buyer backed out after Scheib refused to notarize a letter. They say Scheib was caught after an investigator posed as a New York buyer.
The 50-year-old Scheib faces up to 20 years in prison on Oct. 30.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Making steady progress Saturday against the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history, crews kept a wary eye on weather that was getting warmer and drier as National guard troops were deployed to help local police get things back to normal.
"The weather is making progress in a bad direction. Hotter, drier, with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Winds will shift from one direction to another," said Incident Commander Rich Harvey.
The 26-square-mile Waldo Canyon fire was 30 percent contained. It was one of many burning across the West, including eight in Utah and a fast-growing blaze in Montana that forced residents in several small communities to leave.
More than 1,200 personnel and six helicopters were fighting the Waldo Canyon fire, and authorities said they were confident they'd built good fire lines in many areas to stop flames from spreading.
"Today is going to be our test day," said Jerri Marr, supervisor of the Pike and San Isabella national forests. "Today we're going to see how all the things that we've done hold."
Two bodies were found in the ruins of one house, one of almost 350 destroyed in this city 60 miles south of Denver. The victims' names haven't been released. Police say fewer than 10 people may be unaccounted for.
"There are another couple of people we still have some pretty serious concerns about," Police Chief Pete Carey said.
More than 150 National Guard soldiers and airmen helped Colorado Springs police staff roadblocks and patrol streets. Carey said Saturday the presence of military personnel will allow his department to resume normal police work in the rest of the city.
About 10,000 people remain evacuated, down from more than 30,000 at the fire's peak.
The mood was light as evacuees filtered back into an unscathed neighborhood of winding streets and split-level homes within an easy walk of the burned area.
High school counselor Pat Allen and her husband, Vic Miller, were all smiles less than five minutes after returning to their tri-level home on a quiet cul-de-sac.
"I'm just wanting to kiss the house, dance with the neighbors", Allen said.
Their house didn't smell of smoke. Their electricity was out for two or three days but the popsicles in their freezer didn't melt, she said.
Around the corner, retiree Nina Apsey wandered in search of eight small, solar-powered lights that somebody had taken from her yard during the evacuation.
"I'm assuming it was vandalism," she said.
Prized possessions still piled into the Hyundai sport-utility vehicle in her garage included caribou antlers and antelope and deer head mounts. As flames bore down, she'd also taken a small ceramic cowboy statue. Her late husband taught her how to hunt. He resembled the cowboy, she said.
She wasn't too perturbed about her missing lights because nothing else was touched.
"If that's the worst that happened to me, I'm blessed," she said.
On Sunday people whose homes were burned will be allowed to take bus tours of the affected area.
After exploding earlier in the week, the Colorado Springs fire gained no ground in the last several days. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire that broke out on June 23. Dangerous conditions had kept them from beginning their inquiry.
Among the fires elsewhere in the West:
? Utah: Residents were sifting through the ashes of more than 50 houses destroyed by a central Utah wildfire. Wood Hollow fire spokeswoman Dorothy Harvey says the homeowners were allowed to return Saturday to Indianola along Utah's scenic Route 89. In all, eight wildfires are burning across Utah. The latest to break out Friday destroyed or damaged six houses in the foothills southwest of Salt Lake City.
? Montana: Authorities in eastern Montana ordered the evacuation of several communities Saturday as the Ash Creek Complex fires consumed another 72 square miles, swelling to 244 square miles overnight. One home was destroyed. Elsewhere, firefighters worked to bolster fire lines on at least five other large fires in the state.
? Idaho: A fast-moving 1,000-acre wildfire in eastern Idaho that destroyed 66 homes and 29 outbuildings was expected to be contained Saturday. Slightly calmer weather helped in the effort to halt the human-caused Charlotte fire that started Thursday afternoon. Some 1,000 residents were evacuated; it was unclear when they would be allowed back.
? Colorado: The last evacuees from the High Park Fire in northern Colorado have been allowed to return home as crews get closer to full containment. The 136-square-mile fire killed one resident and destroyed 259 houses, a state record until the fire near Colorado Springs destroyed 346 homes. In western Colorado, the 18-square-mile Pine Ridge Fire is 10 percent contained.

Earlier today, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes?announced they?would be getting a divorce after five years of marriage. In a society built on basic humanity, news of any longtime romantic pair's splitting would be treated with a somber mood and, perhaps, best wishes to both parties involved. However, we do not live in such a world. We live in a world with Twitter.
After quite a while perusing the social networking site to get a taste of how the public was reacting to Cruise's and Holmes' split, a pattern became apparent. For, after immersing itself in the deepest, darkest knolls of the Twitterverse, Hollywood.com couldn't come across a single Tweet about Tom and Katie that was not making fun of their divorce.
Whether you find this to be shameful or entertaining, it's simply the turn our society has taken. So here it is: just a sample of the mass of Cruise/Holmes hate that is encompassing the Internet.?

Every parent wants a happy baby and enjoys watching their child reach certain milestones. They rejoice with each hurdle their baby tackles. Parents often find that baby development seems to be one of their main concerns. Some milestones that parents watch include baby?s first smile, step, and word. Baby?s every move, whether his first smile or first lost tooth becomes chronicled in a baby book. Almost every parent longingly looks forward to baby?s first word. Many become concerned when their child?s speech is slow to develop.
Experts state that there are statistical norms when it comes to babies? first word and other important speech milestones. However, not every baby is the same, and just because a first child talks at 8 months does not mean that the couple?s next baby will be an early babbler as well. However, parents need to be aware of regular speech milestones so they will know what is normal.
Expect the average baby to start making those adorable cooing sounds around 3 months of age. Many parents notice that by 6 months, their baby begins to make repeated syllable sounds. At this stage, ?mama? and ?dada? are merely speech practice. By a year, the average child might have a two- to three-word vocabulary and will try to imitate other words or sounds. Around 18 months of age, most babies say between 8 and 10 words. They also seem to enjoy reading books and pointing to pictures and objects. By age 2, most toddlers start speaking in simple two- to three-word sentences and start using that much dreaded word, ?mine.? This is the age where parents find that their toddlers add words daily. At this point, many parents wonder why they ever worried about their child?s speech, as the toddler now sometimes talks nonstop. But what should a parent do if their child does not reach these milestones at the expected time, and when should they be concerned?
Normal for one child may not be normal for another. Slightly delayed speech may just be a child?s own way of learning their language. However a child who has not met any of the marks of speech development or who is greatly delayed needs a consultation with their pediatrician. If the doctor feels that the child?s speech is delayed, a specialist will be contacted. These specialists could include other medical specialists, educational experts, or speech pathologists. The pediatrician will want to rule out any medical condition or problem that might be delaying speech. An educational expert can figure out if a child?s development is delayed due to learning issues, which sometimes show up in early development. If the issue is speech deformities or hearing issues, a speech pathologist will be contacted.
Parents need to realize that a happy baby is often a result of a happy parent. Baby development issues stress parents, especially when a child?s speech or mobility is delayed. When doctors assure parents that their baby?s delayed speech is just their own style, parents should learn to enjoy their child despite their concerns. There is "no truth" to a Times report that News Corp may buy Monster.com in the next couple days, a source close to News Corp tells us.
News Corp is considering whether to split in two ? a very profitable entertainment division and a not-so-profitable publishing division.
The New York Times's Amy Chozick and Michael de la Merced?report that this decision could be made as soon as Thursday.
In the same report, the Times says that News Corp executives are deciding whether or not to make the publishing division a touch more profitable by acquiring Monster.com (and, presumably, its asset HotJobs.com) and including the jobs-listing site in the spinout.
Our source says that's not true. Of course, this source is close to News Corp, and if News Corp?were interested in Monster, it would probably want to keep the public company's stock price down.
Still: we believe the source. Spinouts are hard enough without working a $1 billion acquisition into them.
Monster has been in play since at least May, when Silver Lake and other private equity buyers took a long look. LinkedIn was also asked to take a look. It did ? and passed.

Skywatchers on the ground have spotted the Chinese Shenzhou 9 spacecraft, which has docked with the Tiangong 1 module, as it hurtled through the night sky.??

Last week, Chinese astronauts docked two spacecraft together in orbit for the first, and now skywatchers on the ground have captured the scene.
Chinese spaceflyers Liu Yang, Jing Haipeng and Liu Wang launched June 16 on the?Shenzhou 9 spacecraft. Two days later, on June 18, the astronauts (known as taikonauts), docked their vehicle at the robotic Tiangong 1 module, which had been in orbit since last autumn.
The two craft have been orbiting Earth together since, with the astronauts ? including China's first female spaceflyer ? living and working onboard. From the ground, the docked Chinese vehicles look much like many other satellites, appearing as a swift-moving pinpoint of light passing across the sky.
Astrophotographer Stephen Mudge?photographed Shenzhou 9 and Tiangong 1?moving roughly 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Brisbane, Australia on June 20. His long-exposure photo shows the docked spacecraft as a bright streak across the otherwise static sky seen in the early morning hours. [How to See China's Shenzhou 6 in Night Sky]
Mudge had shot one of the Chinese spacecraft before. On March 31, before the Shenzhou 9 mission launched, the skywatcher caught a view of Tiangong 1 crossing overhead just five minutes apart from a pass of the International Space Station (ISS).
"The ISS went over first, followed five minutes later by China's Tiangong 1 station only a few degrees away from where the ISS had been," Mudge wrote in an email to SPACE.com.
The International Space Station is the $100 billion product of a collaboration between the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada. Tiangong 1 is much smaller, but it is the prototype module for China's goal of establishing a space station of its own by 2020.
The best suggestions for getting a cheap auto insurance quote is to shop about, and the very best suggestions for shopping around is to compare the vehicle insurance coverage quotes of every single company.
There are several approaches to compare inexpensive vehicle insurance coverage quotes from several auto insurance coverage businesses:
Make a list. Ask your household members, close friends, and even co-workers with whom youre close about the car insurance firms they use. Chances are theyre not all carrying out enterprise with the same vehicle insurance coverage company, so youll be in a position to get truthful reviews of numerous diverse automobile insurance coverage companies. Take note of those that interest you, and forget about those that dont.
Ask about discounts. When you have your list of feasible car insurance coverage companies, call each and every 1 and ask about discounts. Numerous vehicle insurance coverage companies supply discounts for classes taken, great driving records, car safety attributes, and multi-auto policies. Some insurance businesses sell more than just automobile insurance coverage, and will offer you discounts if you get or already have other insurance policies from them. Compare the discounts provided by every as those discounts will assist establish your low cost car insurance coverage quote. Take note of the auto insurance coverage businesses that provide discounts relevant to you.
Pay attention. Ideally, youre seeking for an auto insurance coverage organization with which you can do business for a long time. So, the consumer service must be stellar, correct? As you speak to an agent from every car insurance firm you call, genuinely listen to the rapport. Are they friendly? Do they have immediate answers to your concerns? Do they sound as if theyre in a hurry to finish the conversation?
Cost vs. Alternatives. When you compare inexpensive auto insurance quotes, you shouldnt only be interested in the value you want to get a car insurance policy that offers alternatives you require. Whats the point in paying a low-cost automobile insurance coverage payment if youre sacrificing vital vehicle insurance coverage coverage and protection?
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about possible ways that climate change could effect baseball. This time I want to talk about how a sport can impact the climate.
From constant travel to keeping the stadium lights on, every sport is energy intensive. But NASCAR ? in which drivers race vehicles 500 miles at speeds of 200 miles per hour ? takes energy intensity to a whole new level.
NASCAR is arguably the second most popular sport in America. Though it lacks some of the broad appeal of other sports, the 75 million people that watch it each weekend put the sport behind only the NFL in popularity. And that popularity has its environmental impact beyond what the casual fan might think about.
For example, NASCAR race cars are not subject to the EPA regulations that govern other vehicles on the road. They do not have catalytic converters mandated for every other car on the road. And until 2007, NASCAR used leaded gas ? a toxic fuel that has hasn?t been used in the rest of the U.S. since the 1980?s.
On average, NASCAR cars get between 2 and 5 miles per gallon of gas. How Stuff Works explains:
?In a single typical NASCAR race weekend, with more than 40 cars at high speeds for 500 miles (804 kilometers) ? plus practice laps ? at 5 mpg of gas, you?re looking at, conservatively, about 6,000 gallons (22,712 liters) of fuel [source: Finney]. Each gallon burned emits about 20 pounds (9 kilograms) of carbon dioxide, so that?s about 120,000 pounds (54,431 kilograms) of CO2 for a race weekend [source: FuelEconomy]. Multiply that by roughly 35 races per year, and NASCAR?s annual carbon footprint is in the area of 4 million pounds (1.8 million kilograms).?
Four million pounds certainly isn?t going to tip the climate over the edge, but its still a heck of a lot of CO2 spewed into the atmosphere. And that number doesn?t even include the fleet of diesel powered support vehicles that accompany each racing team at every event around the country.
NASCAR has been mildly cooperative in making its sport more ?green.? In 2011, they introduced an ethanol based additive, E15, into the racing fuel. This increased the power generated by the fuel, but it did so by reducing efficiency significantly.
Beyond just the fuel, NASCAR cars go through a lot of tires. In fact, each team uses approximately 8-10 sets of tires per weekend. The tires are made primarily with synthetic rubber and therefore require oil to produce. According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, it takes about 7 gallons of oil to make one tire.
Assuming we have the 40 racers we had when we looked at fuel consumption, and, conservatively, 8 sets of tires per racer, then NASCAR uses about 8,960 gallons of oil per race weekend on tires alone. Its a little tough to tell how much CO2 is emitted when oil is burned, but one estimate places the number at about 317 kg (or 698.86 lbs) per barrel. That amounts to roughly 149,090 lbs of CO2 emitted into the air per weekend.
Again, that number doesn?t take into account any of the support vehicles needed to make the races happen, just the actual race cars.
When taking into account all the other factors that aren?t unique to this sport ? the cars the fans drive to the game/race, the air travel, the TV crews, the land used for stadiums/racetracks, the lights ? it?s clear just how much impact NASCAR has on the environment.
Does that mean we need to stop it? Of course not.
NASCAR is exciting. The cars go extremely fast and the action is non-stop. The sport shouldn?t be abolished any more than baseball, hockey, or football. Instead, the leadership at NASCAR should take car racing?s energy use seriously and consider new ways to grow the sport and entertain fans ? all while helping develop new, less energy-intensive technologies.

First researchers move to new home of U-M's Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation at North Campus Research Complex
ANN ARBOR, Mich. With a common goal of making health care better, safer, more cost effective and more equal, nearly 400 health researchers from across the University of Michigan and partner organizations have formed one of the nation's largest research entities of its kind.
The Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, which opened its new home just days ago, unites members of an already strong health care research community in a new way making U-M a true powerhouse in the field known as health services research.
From cancer, heart disease and diabetes to children's health, surgery and mental health, IHPI's members study topics in health care delivery, coverage and policy.
Working together through IHPI, the researchers expect they can accelerate their studies on how health care is delivered today, and their tests of innovations that could improve health care, health insurance and health policy tomorrow.
The opening of a new home for IHPI -- in a dedicated building at U-M's North Campus Research Complex -- arrives on the third anniversary of U-M's purchase of that site.
The first 80 IHPI researchers and staff moved in to the newly-renovated building last week, and more than 400 more will move there in coming months, creating a hub of activity and cooperation that will be one of the nation's largest concentrations of healthcare policy and services researchers. In all, IHPI includes nearly 400 faculty researchers plus hundreds of professional staff and trainees.
"We truly expect IHPI to become the largest university-based collection of health services and healthcare policy researchers in the country, and to pursue research that will enhance the health and well-being of people locally, nationally and globally," says Rodney Hayward, M.D., chair of the interim leadership team that has guided IHPI's formation over the past year. He is a professor of internal medicine at the U-M Medical School, a researcher at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and a faculty member in the U-M School of Public Health.
Just over half the members of IHPI are faculty in the U-M Medical School, where IHPI is based, and nearly a quarter are from the U-M School of Public Health. The rest come from U-M's colleges of Engineering, Pharmacy, and Literature, Science & the Arts, its schools of Business, Dentistry, Law, Nursing, Public Policy and Social Work, and its Institute for Social Research.
A full 12 percent of IHPI members hold full or joint appointments at one of IHPI's partners: the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and its Center for Clinical Management Research, the Arbor Research Collaborative for Health, the Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation (a joint venture between U-M and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan), or other partners.
"This cross-disciplinary and public-private nature of IHPI fits perfectly with the overall goal of making the North Campus Research Complex a haven for such research," says David Canter, executive director of NCRC.
He notes that IHPI's faculty and staff who have moved or will move to NCRC are joining more than 1,300 researchers and staff from U-M and 20 private companies at the site.
"As the first research group to move into the IHPI building, we have been struck by the renovation of what had been a very traditional office building into a state-of-the-art research Institute designed to enhance collaboration across disciplines and across campus," says Laurence McMahon, M.D., chief of the General Medicine division in the Medical School's Department of Internal Medicine, a member of IHPI's interim leadership team and the School of Public Health faculty. "We look forward to the realization of the interdisciplinary focus of IHPI. We believe the investment in both architectural design to enhance collaboration as well as the investment in the virtual collaborative infrastructure will serve as a model for research groups across the country."
IHPI members' work is mainly computer-based, but a $13.7 million renovation of a former office building has created space that encourages collaboration and spontaneous meetings. IHPI will also offer computing support and facilities.
By analyzing large amounts of data from hospitals, government agencies, medical societies, insurance companies and other sources, the IHPI researchers hope to spot problems and trends, evaluate how well new treatments and technologies work, and identify ways to improve quality, safety, equity and cost-effectiveness.
The formation of IHPI will give them access to new tools, partnerships and data sources and allow them to share ideas more readily.
Even though not all IHPI members will move to NCRC, the ability for all members to come together virtually should spark collaboration and allow them to seek even more public and private partners also interested in health care delivery. The search for a director for IHPI is now under way.
"Our faculty, and their teams, have for decades made sizable contributions to the improvement of health services and health policy realms," says Martin Philbert, Ph.D., dean of the U-M School of Public Health. "This new institute will deepen and amplify that impact, and will open new avenues for collaboration within and beyond our institution."
"Co-location of health services researchers from across U-M will enable interactions and insights that push the boundaries of our scholarly work and further its impact on health care practice and policy," says James O. Woolliscroft, M.D., dean of the U-M Medical School. "Already the work of IHPI members is making an impact across the country and around the world, and this dedicated new headquarters for the Institute will enable continued success in this growing field."
