Now You Can Discover Music Visually Through Album Art

Detail view of the tiles composing an album art

Australia-born, US-based software engineer Ian Mckellar, created an ingenious visual way to explore music, compositing together album art from thousands of other cover images.

The application, called Musaic, is inspired by different art movements including mosaic art, pointillism and even impressionism. It works very intuitively. Clicking on one of the ?tiles? opens a large version of the selected cover image, then by clicking on the cover art it immediately generates a mosaic composition of the chosen cover artwork.

Where do all the album cover images come from? The project uses the open source API of rdio online music streamers. Musaic was developed during Music Hack Day San Francisco 2012, a developers? event towards the use of programming to reshape the future of music.

Originally programmed over the course of a 24-hour workshop, the application is not designed as a finished project, but viewers can explore the album art generator in its current state online.

What a fun way to discover music visually! I hope Ian Mckellar continue developing the application. How cool would it be to include a player and links to the actual album?
