Hypothyroidism is a condition in humans in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormones.?The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland found at the base of the neck.?The thyroid gland is responsible for the production of two key hormones: triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).?The thyroid absorbs iodine from supplements or food and then combines that iodine with tyrosine, an amino acid.?The thyroid gland then converts the iodine/tyrosine combination into the key hormones T3 and T4.?These two major hormones help control a persons growth and overall metabolism.?Common Underactive Thyroid Symptoms include sluggishness, constipation, joint pain, muscle aches, brittle hair and fingernails, depression, and cold intolerance.?A number of factors can lead to thyroid problems such as iodine deficiency, radiation exposure, thyroid surgery, medicines, and Hashimotos thyroiditis.
