Flash CMS Web Templates - Flashing Light Will Blind Us

The World wide web is already a great surroundings for interaction, business and entertainment. But due to the fact of Flash, it is now richer and extra vibrant. Flash is really a powerful technology that lights up internet content by way of moving pictures, video clips and interactive tools. Flash is the reason why numerous sites gain popularity, simply because it is able to recreate the ideas of internet site owners and users into real life visible written content. From the style aspects of websites, Flash has evolved considerably with the emergence of articles manage systems, or simply CMS. Considering that Flash-enabled programs and companies are found to be tough to manage once they are as well several to handle, CMS lets the user organize, maintain and show several visible written content in their optimal good quality. Currently, you'll find a whole lot of flash cms templates offered online which can help you generate a lot more pleasant-looking web site.

Considering its introduction in the year 1996, Flash is now a critical element inside creation of internet websites and web pages. It has improved throughout the years, and its latest technological innovation, Flash content material management system, is its crowning glory today. The Flash CMS lets the user display dynamic and rich visible subject material with textual contents left uncompromised. Just before with Flash not incorporated with all the CMS know-how, the users have to display visual content material in a very distinct room as that of the textual content material itself. Looking at this view, we can say that CMS is really a useful tool in bring visible and textual subject material together in a single viewing.

There are numerous pros that surround the use of Flash web templates together with the CMS technology included. First, you'll be able to experience an atmosphere where articles is organized, whether they're of textual or visible kind. Animations and videos are displayed a lot simpler and are viewed in a very entire different, but far better, way than prior to utilizing the CMS technological innovation. Subject material and visuals may be viewed all at the same time, thanks to Flash with CMS templates. With this, the website visitors get an initial excellent impression of your products and companies, simply because your presentation with the internet site in its homepage is built a good deal superior by Flash CMS.

When creating a site, a web site owner has the option to hire a professional internet site designer or developer to produce the requirements from the web site and its aesthetics, for example the format, layout and design. However, we all know that this would price too considerably for new web site owners, and also would take a whole lot of time just before even publishing the internet site. Simply because of these drawbacks, Flash templates are now pre-made to accommodate the elements of time, money and effort for the sake from the site. Most of the times, the excellent of customized templates and Flash enabled web templates are just of the identical level, the only difference is that its pre-made nature makes publishing faster but with lower costs when you prefer Flash web templates.

The power of Flash has been intensified by the CMS technological innovation since its creation a few years back. With flash cms templates, you may be assured of publishing an attractive website in a very short period of time.

Top PPC Tips For Local Businesses | PPC Hero?

Here?s the deal ? you want PPC to power your business, but you offer a product or service that can only cater to the local community. What options does that leave you? There are really two things I want to focus on ? the first is making sure your PPC is as awesome as it can be, and this comes from taking advantage of all the tools and tricks available to you as a local business. The second is ensuring you get enough traffic to make your business viable, which can be tricky, particularly in smaller towns.

?

Be More Targeted

The main thing you have going for you over your huge corporate conglomerate competitors as a local business is that you can afford to be much more targeted with your paid search efforts. Below is a quick table I pulled in Excel from one of my clients? campaigns. We are currently running a test to see if ads that feature their location in the headline perform better or worse than their current top ad. As you can see including the location has so far resulted in double the conversion rate and a much lower cost per conversion. Although there is a lack of statistical significance here, these results are reflected across the board in the other campaigns we are testing ? in only one out of nine campaigns are the original ads generating more conversions. This tells us that there is something to be gained from emphasizing your locality to your customers.

?

Alongside making sure your ads are targeted, make sure your website and landing pages also play upon your location and how you serve the local area. If your ads mention your location don?t allow there to be a potential disconnect where you customers are wondering if they are in the right place.

?

Make sure you make good use of the excellent array of location targeting available to you. Google recently started allowing you to target down to the ZIP code in the US. This gives you an excellent opportunity to gather some data about which neighborhoods generate the strongest returns for you by putting different ZIP locations in their own campaigns. It?s also really useful if you deliver only within certain areas ? you don?t want to be showing your ?Free Pizza Delivery? ads to people outside of your delivery area or you are just going to annoy people.

?

?

Getting the Traffic

One of the biggest issues you are likely to face advertising only within your locality is a lack of traffic. I recently spent a day setting up the most perfectly targeted, segmented and quality score optimized campaign for a client, who turned out to only get 49 impressions in a week. Sometimes with all the best intentions in the world, you just simply can?t get enough search traffic to sustain your business. In this case we suggest taking a wide approach to PPC. Rather than focusing on making everything in your account as granular and quality score optimized as possible, you need to cast a wide net. This doesn?t mean you can?t still be targeted, but it does mean you want to start early with branching into different PPC channels.

?

A few good starting points will be:

  • Bing ? this is the easiest win for extra traffic. You can pretty much copy + paste your Google AdWords campaigns if you don?t have time to manage it separately.
  • Facebook ? Can be a real driver of interest and traffic for local businesses. Make use of a combination of location targeting and interests here. For example, someone in Bloomington, IN with ?pizza? as an interest could be targeted with a ?Bloomington Pizza Lovers? ad that offers a 10% online discount.
  • LinkedIn ? Expensive, but can be great if you know your customers? demographic well. Good for local businesses that offer corporate services.
  • Twitter ? Use promoted tweets to push events or information to people in your area. Be aware, Twitter?s location targeting still has trouble with some smaller locations. Having just checked, it was unable to target Bloomington, IN (home of PPC Hero), but was able to target Indianapolis.

?

Google Display Network and Remarketing are also going to be potential areas of traffic generation that should outperform your local searches. I don?t know about you, but I tend to notice the AdSense ads that mention my hometown a lot more than the generic ones that I tend to have partial blindness towards. I?ve seen above average display CTRs for many of the display campaigns I?ve set up for local businesses. If you are in an expensive and competitive industry such as insurance or law, display also offers you a chance to buy in clicks for much cheaper than you would be able to afford in Search ? $2 vs $30 in one extreme case I found.

?

If you can afford it, I?d also recommend setting up call tracking for your local PPC efforts. Locals are more likely to call up, whether to check for restaurant reservations, order a pizza, schedule a visit to your legal offices etc. It is important you start this early as in a low click environment you?ll want to nail down the types of keywords that are leading to phone calls and driving interest in your business. You can go with Google?s phone call extensions as a good starting point, or if you have a bit more money available think about using an option like Mongoose Metrics who will set up something a bit more advanced for you.

?

Being local

As we spend most of our time, fellow PPC Hero Sean Quadlin and I were discussing the latest season of ESPN?s 30 for 30 show in the office yesterday, particularly There?s No Place Like Home ? a documentary about trying to return the original rules of basketball to their rightful home with the Kansas Jayhawks. Sean happens to have a friend in Kansas who knew the director wasn?t a true Kansan because he endorsed the phrase ?There?s no place like home? ? a phrase people from Kansas refuse to use due to rampant overuse. Whether or not people in Kansas do in fact despise the phrase or not, it did raise an interesting point ? as a local business you should have one strong advantage over national companies ? namely that you are aware of ideas, phrases or terminology that will and won?t go over well with your local audience and that will make locals believe you are genuine. If you really want to get ahead, make sure you think carefully about the different ways locals might react to your ads and website compared to the norm.

?

?There?s No Place Like PPC Hero, Toto?

?

Location extensions are a great tool your local business should be making use of for two main reasons:

  1. You gain additional points for both trust and ease of use if someone is searching for a product or service you offer and sees on Google Maps that you are located nearby.
  2. If I?m driving and suddenly decide I want to buy lunch (see below)/clothes/insurance, a quick search on Google Maps (having pulled over safely) for a nearby location will probably be my main source of information. A good ad with location extension will help convince people like me to come to your store thanks to the convenience of the GPS.

You can tell I?m getting hungry

?

?

Finally try and get your customers to leave feedback for you ? positive Google review extensions on your ads will help increase your CTRs. I?ve also seen good success with Google Plus extensions ? particularly if you have a lot of followers. If you can attract followers by updating your menu specials or giving out coupons on Google Plus, it will be a benefit to you in the long run.

?

Hopefully this should get you thinking about how you can up your game in the local PPC world! If any of you have found success with local PPC advertising, let us know what you did in the comments below.

Durand reattributed to Inness - Lines and Colors

Durand reattributed to Inness
In what is an instructive example of the ever shifting landscape of art history, and the mercurial nature of the past in general, a painting in the Dallas Museum of Art that had long ben attributed to the hand of Hudson River School painter Asher B. Durand has been reassigned to George Inness, another great American landscape painter.

Inness was very much influenced by Durand, particularly early in his career, and went on to become even more well known than the elder artist.

Attribution of the painting had been in question, and was borderline to being reduced to ?Attributed to Durand? status. Associate Curator of American Art Pauline Gill studied the painting, which was in storage, and in a search for possible alternative attribution, came across a pen and ink drawing by George Inness from the Princeton University Art Museum which appears to be a potential study for the painting.

An expert on Inness was called in and the painting has been reattributed to the more well known artist.

In a demonstration of the little realized fact that a large percentage of the titles of historic artworks are given by curators and art dealers after the fact and not named by the artists themselves, the painting has been retitled from ?In the Woods?, a title in keeping with Durand?s works, to ?Stream in the Mountains?, a title more in line with the themes associated with Inness? work of the period.

Unfortunately, the museum?s website, in accord with the apparent unwritten standards of PR cluelessness demonstrated by a huge number of art museum websites, has not capitalized on the news by publishing an article and image accessible from the home page, but has instead left the story to languish in an unillustrated press release.

The local and national press have done a better job of covering and promoting the story.

I couldn?t even come up with an image of the work on the museum?s site by searching the collections for either Durand, Inness or the alternative names given to the work (sigh).

Family: Mali military killed 8 Tuareg herders

The Malian military killed eight peaceful civilians, a relative said Tuesday after the government announced its soldiers had targeted armed gunmen suspected of attacking a bus.

The deaths mark the second time soldiers have been accused of killing unarmed civilians at a time when the international community is looking to Mali's military to lead efforts to retake the country's north from the hands of radical Islamists.

Mali's government released a statement on Monday stating that its troops had killed about 10 men near the town of Diabaly on Oct. 21. It said the soldiers also had recovered two shotguns along with ammunition.

However, in an interview with The Associated Press, relative Mohamed Amzad said the men were animal herders ? not criminals. Amzad said he believed the deaths stemmed from a decade-long rivalry between two families in the area.

One of the victims, Mohamed Almoustapha Ould Wilayata, had fallen out with a family close to a soldier in the Malian army," his cousin said.

"It's the same soldier who brought the army here this time to kill them," he said.

The men killed were Tuaregs, an ethnic group from northern Mali that has faced discrimination in the country's south.

In September, rank-and-file soldiers killed 16 unarmed Muslim preachers in the same region, many of whom were coming from Mauritania en route to a religious conference in Mali's capital.

The Malian government statement asked people to notify security forces of suspicious acts to better help them "protect and safeguard the interests of the nation."

Mali descended into political chaos in March when mutinous soldiers overthrew the democratically elected president who was nearing the end of his final term in office.

The junta's leader nominally handed over power to a civilian transitional government, though no timetable has been set for new elections and the junta leader has not completely removed himself from politics.

The mutinous soldiers said they overthrew then-President Amadou Toumani Toure because of the way he had mishandled a Tuareg rebellion in the north. However, the coup provided a power vacuum that has allowed al-Qaida-linked Islamist militants to seize control of an area the size of France where they have carried out public executions, whippings and amputations.

Momentum is mounting for a regional military intervention to retake the north, though analysts question whether Mali's military is capable of leading such an effort.

FCC: 'The storm is not over' | The Daily Caller

The Federal Communications Commission?is reporting that Superstorm Sandy damaged major communications networks during its assault on the Eastern Seaboard Monday.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski told reporters Tuesday during a conference call that flooding, high winds and snow?disabled 25 percent of cell towers, cable TV, broadband Internet and landlines in affected areas

He also said that several 911 call centers were also disabled during the storm.

?The storm is not over. Our assumption is that communications outages could get worse before they get better ? particularly for mobile,? he said.

The Hill?reported?that ?[b]efore the storm hit on Monday, Genachowski spoke to the chief executives of the major communications companies, discussing preparedness efforts and offering the commission?s resources and support.?

On Monday, the agency?s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau announced the activation of the Disaster Information Reporting System.

The system, according to a public notice released by the agency, is a ?voluntary, web-based system that communications providers, including wireless, wireline, broadcast, cable and Voice over Internet Protocol providers, can use to report communications infrastructure status and situational awareness during times of crisis.?

?The FCC will coordinate with the companies, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and state officials to restore service,? said The Hill.

The State of New Haven, Connecticut Real Estate ? CT Homes LLC

What?s all the buzz about New Haven, CT homes and why should home buyers and investors be keeping their eye on them?

Connecticut real estate is often overlooked by investors and global home buyers, but many are now waking up to its attraction.

Connecticut real estate may not claim as much media coverage as San Diego, Miami or New York but in the current market that is actually a major plus for both everyday home buyers and investors looking to cash in on the current market.

We?ve all heard how swarms of real estate investors are descending on places like Phoenix, Atlanta and Sacramento and also how CT homes are just now really feeling the pinch of the foreclosure crisis. This means a golden opportunity with the presence of distressed properties for sale at appetizing discounts, yet without all the competition of other markets.

New Haven, CT in particular deserves the attention of savvy home buyers and investors due to a combination of factors. It may not be the sexiest place in the world for buying a home but it is anchored by a strong foundation that will ensure it keeps growing in the right direction.

This is the 6th largest city in the region and home to Yale University and we know that isn?t going away anytime soon. Many also may not be aware of the strength of local industry which is grounded by healthcare, biotech, engineering and financial services.

This is a moderate Connecticut real estate market with mid-priced homes with 100 year old cozy homes in need of updating from as little as $30,000 on the cheap end, and up to $2 million for a lush private retreat on 6 acres.

Although there are foreclosures RealtyTrac reports just 1 in every 1,030 homes in the city received a new notice in September 2012, just a third of the rate being seen in Florida and other harder hit states. This means that while there are great buys to be made, the market is strong. And even though local home prices have still been finding their feet, locals and out of area investors have been becoming more active, pushing up sales volume by 8.4% since last year and the average price per square foot by 4.2% according to Trulia.

It?s a great time to buy CT homes, whether for long term wealth building and rental income, quick profits from flipping houses or just to lock in a great deal on a new residence.

?Man in Moon? created by asteroid the size of Austria

The "Man in the Moon" may have been created by a giant asteroid (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science??The famous flattened image across the surface of the moon, long dubbed the "Man in the Moon," appears to have been created by a giant asteroid the size of Austria.

A new study published in the British journal Nature Geoscience says the flattened, 1,800-mile-wide section of the moon's Procellarum basin was caused after the large asteroid crashed into the moon's surface.

"The nearside and farside of the Moon are compositionally distinct," reads the introduction to the study. "The detection of low-calcium pyroxene around large impact basins suggests that the huge Procellarum basin on the nearside may be an ancient impact structure and a relic scar of the violent collision that produced the lunar dichotomy."

Scientists at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology studied the distribution of minerals on the moon's surface using data collected by Japanese moon exploration orbiters, the Asahi Shimbun reported.

The size of the asteroid is estimated to have been 180 miles in diameter, hitting the moon's surface 3.9 billion years ago.

"The latest study explains why the moon's two sides are so different," said Junichi Watanabe, a professor of astronomy at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. "It helps unravel the mystery of the moon's history."

Honeybees harbor antibiotic-resistance genes

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Bacteria in the guts of honeybees are highly resistant to the antibiotic tetracycline, probably as a result of decades of preventive antibiotic use in domesticated hives. Researchers from Yale University identified eight different tetracycline resistance genes among U.S. honeybees that were exposed to the antibiotic, but the genes were largely absent in bees from countries where such antibiotic use is banned. The study appears on October 30 in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

"It [resistance] seems to be everywhere in the U.S.," says Nancy Moran of Yale University, a senior author on the study. "There's a pattern here, where the U.S. has these genes and the others don't."

Honeybees the world over are susceptible to the bacterial disease called "foulbrood", which can wipe out a hive faster than beekeepers can react to the infection. In the U.S., beekeepers have kept the disease at bay with regular preventive applications of the antibiotic oxytetracycline, a compound that closely resembles tetracycline, which is commonly used in humans. Oxytetracycline has been in use among beekeepers since the 1950s, and many genes that confer resistance to oxytetracycline also confer resistance to tetracycline.

Using sensitive molecular techniques, Moran and her colleagues screened honeybees from several locations in the United States and from Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and New Zealand as well as several wild bumblebees from the Czech Republic, for the presence and abundance of tetracycline resistance genes. They found that U.S. honeybees have greater numbers and a more diverse set of tetracycline resistance genes than honeybees from the other countries.

Moran says it is reasonable to expect to see widespread resistance among bees, considering the decades-long use of oxytetracycline in honeybee hives. "It seems likely this reflects a history of using oxytetracycline since the 1950s. It's not terribly surprising. It parallels findings in other domestic animals, like chickens and pigs," says Moran.

Moran notes that beekeepers have long used oxytetracycline to control the bacterium that causes foulbrood, but the pathogen eventually acquired resistance to tetracycline itself. Of the foulbrood pathogens Melissococcus pluton and Paenibacillus larvae, Moran says, "They carry tetL, which is one of the eight resistance genes we found. It's possible that the gene was transferred either from the gut bacteria to the pathogen or from the pathogen to the gut bacteria."

Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and New Zealand do not allow beekeepers to use oxytetracycline in hives, so it is perhaps predictable that honeybees and wild bumblebees from these countries harbored only two or three different resistance genes and only in very low copy numbers, suggesting that the bacteria did not require the genes very frequently.

The authors of the study point out that by encouraging resistance and altering the bacteria that live in honeybee guts, decades of antibiotic applications may have actually been detrimental to honeybee wellbeing. Studies have suggested that the bacterial residents of the honeybee gut play beneficial roles in neutralizing toxins in the bees' diet, nutrition, and in defending the bee against pathogens. By disrupting the honeybee microbiota and reducing its diversity, long-term antibiotic use could weaken honeybee resistance to other diseases. Hence, the treatment that was meant to prevent disease and strengthen the hive may actually weaken its ability to fight off other pathogens.

Moran says while the study is interesting from the perspective of honeybee health and could have implications for how honeybee diseases are managed, the presence of resistance genes in the honeybee gut doesn't pose a direct risk to humans. These gut bacteria, says Moran, "don't actually live in the honey, they live in the bee. We've never actually detected them in the honey. When people are eating honey, they're not eating these bacteria."

Hurricane Sandy charged into the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States today. Sandy isn?t exactly a common name these days. How can you get a tropical storm named after yourself?

Lobby the National Weather Service. The World Meteorological Association maintains lists of tropical storm names for each of the next six years. When that six-year cycle ends, the sequence of names goes back to the beginning. If your name is Valerie, for example, you might have a storm named after you this year and again in 2018. Wilfreds can hope for tropical storm namesakes in 2014 and 2020. Ophelias should stay tuned to the forecast in 2017 and 2023. (These names only apply to storms in the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and North Atlantic. There are separate lists for storms originating in other parts of the world.) The lists of names don?t change until a storm becomes so powerful and damaging that the World Meteorological Association retires its name from rotation out of respect for the victims of the storm. There will be no more Hurricanes Katrina or Andrew, for example. When a name is retired, the WMO?s Tropical Cyclone Committee picks a replacement name at its annual meeting. There is no official opportunity to put your name into consideration, so the best avenue would be to lobby the National Weather Service, which represents the United States at these meetings. For the record, the NWS does not invite name proposals.

Although the Tropical Cyclone Committee endeavors to choose names that are ?familiar to the people in each region,? the popularity of a name in the United States seems to carry little importance in the name selection process. ?Sandy? barely cracked the top 200 most popular U.S. female names in 1947, and fell out of the top 1,000 six years ago. Irene, which was retired last year, was among the most popular girls? names in the 1920s, but hasn?t seen the top 200 since 1961 and now ranks 689th. Its replacement, Irma, dropped out of the top 1,000 names 17 years ago. This year?s most popular names, Sophia and Jacob, are not on any of the tropical storm name lists.

The popularity of a name in the United State may not influence the World Meteorological Association?s selection process, but the names of hurricanes appear to affect the popularity of baby names. According to research published this year in the journal Psychological Science, repeatedly hearing the name of a damaging storm causes Americans to choose baby names with similar sounds to the name of the storm. The researchers noted that after Katrina struck, there was a 9 percent increase in names beginning with the letter ?K.?

Piracy Is Killing Our Business ? John Mensah | Ghana Filla? ? com

President of the National Society of Ghana Music Producers (NASGAMP,) John Mensah Sarpong, has revealed pathetically that the perennial piracy problem is still collapsing the music industry in the country.

He disclosed that the piracy menace had reduced the average one million copies of CD sales in a year by music producers of his calibre to just 50,000 in recent times, fearing for the worse.

In an exclusive chat with BEATWAVES in Kumasi, the NASGAMP President asked for stringent collaborative efforts between his outfit and the security agencies to help curb the piracy menace. He bemoaned that the security agents were not doing enough in the fight against piracy, adding that piracy was on the increase because of lack of education about the act among the people.

The occasion was a one-day sensitization workshop in Kumasi under the theme ?Advocacy for the Enforcement of the Copyright Law to protect the rights of musicians and music producers in Ghana,? and was organized by NASGAMP.

Carlos Sakyi, president, Ghana Music Rights Organization, in his succinct remarks, described pirates as thieves and called for effective and rapid legal system in the country to deal with offenders.

He wept over the influx of foreign pirated music in the country which was sold on the market at cheap prices, thereby, killing the Ghana music industry in the process, asking ?where do these foreign pirated music CDs pass before getting into the market??

Mr. Sakyi said copyright gave the musician and producers control and power over their music, but he was quick to state that more was needed to be done in order to effectively battle the piracy menace.

The workshop was to update the participants including musicians, music producers, film producers, actors and actresses on their roles and responsibilities to ensure effective enforcement of the Copyright Law in Ghana.

Ambrose Yenah, CEO AIDEC Consultancies International Limited, a consultancy firm in Accra, on his part, challenged the NASGAMP to collaborate with the National Communication Authority to come out with a mechanism to track down those who downloaded music and films on the internet.

He observed that the various splinter groups in the music industry did not augur well for the promotion of music and creative arts in the country, admonishing key players in the industry to unite with a common voice to drum home their grievance.

Crane dangling from NYC high-rise

NEW YORK (AP) ? A construction crane is dangling off a luxury high-rise in Manhattan, prompting a large emergency response as a huge storm bears down on New York City.

The crane is at West 57th Street. No injuries are reported.

The city has ordered people in neighboring buildings to move to lower floors. Streets have been cleared.

The call came in around 2:30 p.m. Monday as conditions worsened from the approaching Hurricane Sandy. Meteorologists say winds that far off the ground might have been close to 95 mph at the time.

The Buildings Department had suspended construction work at 5 p.m. Saturday. It reminded contractors and property owners to secure construction sites and buildings.

A six-bedroom penthouse at the building, called One57, is under contract for a reported $90 million.

Facebook, Twitter abuzz with hurricane chatter

This NOAA satellite image taken Monday, Oct. 29, 2012 shows Hurricane Sandy off the Mid Atlantic coastline moving toward the north with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph. Hurricane Sandy wheeled toward land as forecasters feared Monday, raking cities along the Northeast corridor with rain and wind gusts, flooding shore towns, washing away a section of the Atlantic City Boardwalk, and threatening to cripple Wall Street and New York's subway system with a huge surge of corrosive seawater. Whether you call it Frankenstorm, Stormpocalypse or simply Hurricane Sandy, the giant weather system barreling into the East Coast is a favorite topic of conversation on social media from Facebook to Twitter. As people post updates to friends and family, relay emergency information and lighten the mood with humor, it's clear that discussing natural disasters on social media has become as much a part of the experience as stocking up on bread and batteries.

As of Monday afternoon, the hashtag "Sandy" had 233,000 photos posted on Instagram, the mobile photo-sharing service owned by Facebook. "Hurricanesandy," meanwhile, had 100,000 photos and "Frankenstorm" had 20,000 and growing.

As they waited for the storm to hit over the weekend, people posted photos of hurricane-preparedness supplies ranging from canned goods to board games and bottles of wine. Empty grocery store shelves where bread should have been also showed up on Facebook and Instagram.

"There are now 10 pictures per second being posted with the hashtag "Sandy" - most are images of people prepping for the storm and images of scenes outdoors, said Instagram CEO Kevin Systorm in an emailed statement. "I think this demonstrates how Instagram is quickly becoming a useful tool to see the world as it happens - especially for important world events like this."

By Monday, dispatches about storm preparations gave way to messages of anticipation and real-time updates. Among U.S. users, the terms "Sandy", "Hurricane Sandy" and "Hurricane" were the most-used terms on Facebook, followed by "stay safe" and "be safe." In fact, all of the top 10 most-mentioned phrases on Facebook related to the storm in some way among U.S. users, the company said. "Power," ''cold," ''my friends" and "prayers" were also in the top 10.

To gauge how much its users are talking about a particular topic, Facebook uses a measurement tool it calls the "talk meter," which ranks terms around a topic or event on a scale of 1 to 10. Tops that generate the most buzz receive a 10. As of Friday afternoon, Sandy-related chatter was at 7.12, the company said. In comparison, the San Francisco Giants World Series win on Sunday night measured at 6.71 on Facebook.

On Twitter, Frankenstorm, FEMA ? for Federal Emergency Management Agency ? and New Jersey were among the top trending topics in the United States. Forecasters expected the hurricane's center to come ashore in southern New Jersey Monday evening.

Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley reminded his more than 53,000 Twitter followers to "ALWAYS BE CHARGING." Millions of East Coasters could experience electric power and landline telephone outages. As a result, power-hungry smart phones, laptops and tablet computers may become only way to communicate.

Home prices rise at quickened pace

By The Associated Press

Home prices rose in nearly all U.S. cities last month, the latest evidence of a steady recovery in housing.

The Standard & Poor's/Case Shiller index reports that national home prices increased 2 percent in August compared with the same month a year ago. That's the third straight increase and a faster pace than in July.

And prices in hard-hit Las Vegas rose 0.9 percent, the first year-over-year gain since January 2007.

The report also says prices rose in August from July in 19 of the 20 cities tracked by the index. Prices had risen in all 20 cities in the previous three months.

Seattle reported a small decline of 0.1 percent in August from July. Prices are still 3.4 percent higher than a year ago.

Volunteers in Medicine Turns 5 Thanks to a 'Kind' Community

Volunteers in Medicine

BY JANET MANDELSTAM

They walk into the clinic on West 2nd Street?113 of them on an average day?to see a doctor or dentist, stop at the pharmacy, or receive mental health services. Monday is women?s health night; the Friday focus is on spines. And if they meet the eligibility requirements, the care is delivered at no cost.

Since 2007, Volunteers in Medicine of Monroe County (VIM) has been providing health care at the clinic to low-income, uninsured residents of Monroe and Owen counties.

VIM is a national program with clinics in some 90 locations. But a few years ago Dr. Rajih Haddawi noticed that ?we didn?t have anything in our county to serve these people.? Haddawi, now a retired orthopedic hand surgeon, visited other sites and held more than 50 meetings with ?people who all supported the idea? of establishing a clinic in Bloomington.

?Dr. Haddawi?s passion brought people to the table,? says VIM Executive Director Nancy Richman. ?He said the community has to provide services to those who cannot access care.? With strong support from The Cook Group, Bloomington Hospital (now IU Health), and hundreds of medical and lay volunteers, VIM opened as a family-practice clinic.

Today more than 450 volunteers and a paid staff of 9 offer primary and preventive care, health education, medications (with only a low-cost handling fee), psychological counseling, diagnostic laboratory and radiology tests (at the hospital), and dental care. Any uninsured resident of Monroe or Owen county whose income does not exceed 200 percent of the federal poverty level is eligible to be treated at the clinic. For an individual, 200 percent of the poverty level is $22,340; for a family of four, it is $46,100.

Richman says the clinic has seen ?a steady increase? in the number of clients it serves. ?And there have been demographic changes, too,? she says. ?It?s not just the homeless. Many of the clients are employed or under-employed but have no health insurance.? It would not be possible to serve them, she says, ?without the phenomenal support of the community.?

Volunteer coordinator Shelley Sallee says the volunteers ?are a reflection of Bloomington, of how kind and compassionate this community is. They want to help people who need medical care in any way they can.? Many of the medical volunteers are retired doctors and dentists. The duties of the lay volunteers, who range from college students to an 87-year-old receptionist, include greeting clients, working the phones, scheduling appointments, and updating medical records.

The relationship between the clinic and IU Health Bloomington Hospital benefits both. The hospital provides three full-time staffers for the clinic?a registered nurse, a nurse practitioner, and a pharmacist?and performs laboratory and radiology tests for clinic clients. ?The hospital is very proud to support the Volunteers in Medicine clinic,? says Ruth Ann Morris, vice president of patient-care services at IU Health and a member of the clinic board. Because the clinic has become a source of primary care, preventive services, and continuity for its clients, ?there are fewer emergency room visits? at the hospital, Morris says. ?It?s quality care at less cost.?
