Review: Josephine Oniyama and Emilia Mitiku, Cheltenham Jazz ...

THE mercury may have been rising at the Big Top with the latest bout of glorious sunshine, but there was still something that little bit ice cool about the line-up.

Josephine?Oniyama?and Emilia Mitiku delivered two separate but equally enchanting performances that proved without doubt that Cheltenham Jazz Festival was the place to be this weekend.

I have to admit I was new to both acts and having had the chance to see Dionne Warwick in the same venue earlier in the week, felt a little worried. There was that sense of having already devoured a Michelin star main course and now I was about to be served tinned fruit and ice cream.?

Except that actually, the only cherry put in front of me was the one that both acts placed on top. And there was liberal helpings too.?

Josephine was first up with her soulful mature vocals leading the audience through her new album, Portrait, which was littered with catchy melodies and quirky arrangements.?

The title track, Portrait, was undoubtedly my favourite with lyrics that touched on society's increasing reliance on technology. How very, 21st century.?

Refreshingly, each song had it's own distinctive flavour. All sweet without ever becoming sugary. Josephine took it up one minute, stripped it back the next.?

She's far from just another soul singer and with upbeat songs that smack of the soundtrack to a sunny cider-glugging summer, she's one to watch.

Emilia followed, bringing her booming, yet controlled voice and likeable personality to a very grateful audience.

There was a story to many of her songs, teasing the crowd with a little but reluctant to add meat to the bones. Nothing unusual to inspire lyrics of course. Think relationships and rather predictably, you're on the right lines.

But time was at the essence and certainly Emilia's music did the talking. A cover of Dream A Little Dream a particular highlight.

And that was it. Another meaty jazzy number wrapped up a gig which had flown by in a venue that was becoming more like sauna-like by the second.

Without doubt, it's becoming a melting pot for some of the finest talent.
