The first-ever American Time Use Survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that 16 percent of the U.S. population provided unpaid care to someone over the age of 65 in 2011. According to the report, the rising number of eldercare providers were most likely to be women between the ages of 45 and 64 and most took care of only one person, with 42 percent providing care for a parent. Eldercare, as defined by the survey, can include anything from assistance with grooming, preparing meals, and providing transportation to companionship or being available to help when needed. Among the 39.8 million eldercare providers in 2011, the average person spent 3.1 hours providing care on days they were needed and just over half of this time was spent on leisure and household activities.
