LIVE VIDEO: Protesters gather in Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo, Egypt.
By Charlene Gubash and Ian Johnston, NBC News
CAIRO - The clock is ticking for Egypt?s President Mohammed Morsi to meet the demands of millions of protesters seeking his ouster and fresh elections after an ultimatum issued to the Islamist leader by his own armed forces.
If Morsi does not meet the demands by Wednesday, the military has said it will impose its own ?road map? for the future.
Morsi rejected the army?s call in a statement issued at 2 a.m. local time Tuesday (8 p.m. Monday ET) by saying his administration would continue on its "previously plotted path" toward reconciliation. Violence during the protests at the weekend saw 16 people killed and hundreds injured.
Barack Obama and the United Nations have each urged Morsi to listen to his people, as a vast crowd gathered once again in Cairo's Tahrir Square Tuesday.
Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the United Nations? High Commissioner for Human Rights, told a briefing Tuesday that they were following the ?extremely tense situation? in Egypt with ?great concern.?
?We urge all political parties and social groups to urgently engage in a serious national dialogue in order to find a solution to the political crisis and prevent an escalation of violence,? Colville said.
?We call on the president of Egypt to listen to the demands and wishes of the Egyptian people, expressed during these huge protests over the past few days, and to address key issues raised by the opposition and civil society in recent months, as well as to heed the lessons of the past in this particularly fragile situation,? he added.
NBC's Richard Engel reports from Cairo, where he says "it feels like a new revolution could be underway" as opponents of Mohammed Morsi are demanding he be removed from the presidency.
He welcomed assurances given by the military and law enforcement agencies that ?no measures will be taken that could lead to excessive use of force against peaceful demonstrators.?
The White House said in a statement Tuesday that Obama had called Morsi on Monday, urging him to listen to ?the voices of all Egyptians.?
Obama told Morsi that the United States was ?committed to the democratic process in Egypt and does not support any single party or group.?
But the president also ?stressed that democracy is about more than elections.?

The headquarters of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood was ransacked as widespread protests against President Mohammed Morsi turned violent.
?It is also about ensuring that the voices of all Egyptians are heard and represented by their government, including the many Egyptians demonstrating throughout the country,? the statement said.
Obama encouraged Morsi ?to take steps to show that he is responsive to their concerns, and underscored that the current crisis can only be resolved through a political process,? it added.
?President Obama also underscored his deep concern about violence during the demonstrations, especially sexual assaults against female citizens,? the White House said. ?He reiterated his belief that all Egyptians protesting should express themselves peacefully, and urged President Morsi to make clear to his supporters that all forms of violence are unacceptable.?
Amid the heightened tensions, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo was closed on Tuesday with regular consular service suspended. It was also closed on Sunday. U.S. citizens were advised to ?avoid areas where large gatherings may occur.?
On June 28, the State Department allowed a ?limited number of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and family members? to leave the country ?due to the ongoing political and social unrest.?
Canada said on Twitter that its embassy in Cairo would be ?closed until further notice for security reasons.?
According to an airport security source, ?a list has been circulated containing the names of 48 leading members of political parties, including the Muslim Brotherhood, who must now inform national security officials before leaving the country. The use of private jets has also been temporarily banned.
It remains unclear whether the Egyptian army was actually calling for Morsi to stand down, or whether it would accept some attempted compromise.
However, a statement issued by Morsi?s office complained said that it was not consulted about the army?s ultimatum and said ?the presidency sees that some of the statements in it carry meanings that could cause confusion in the complex national environment.?
It added that his administration was ?going forward on its previously plotted path to promote comprehensive national reconciliation ... regardless of any statements that deepen divisions between citizens.?
Protesters attacked and stormed the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo, calling for Egypt's president Mohammed Morsi to step down. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.
Morsi?s office, discussing the call with Obama, said the U.S. was ?working with the Egyptian leadership elected by the Egyptian people and supports peaceful democratic conditions in Egypt.?
?The president confirmed that Egypt is moving forward in a peaceful democratic transition built on constitution and law,? Morsi?s office said.
It also said that Egypt?s ?democratic, civil, modern state? was ?the most important achievement? of the revolution that deposed former President Hosni Mubarak.
?We will not allow Egypt with all its forces to return backward under any circumstances,? Morsi?s office said. ?Egypt has paid dearly from the blood of its sons and its stability and security and its delayed the path to development, these are the high prices it paid to build a new state. We all chose democratic means as the only safest way to manage our differences of opinion."
Ian Johnston reported from London.

(Let?s assume technical competence and basic artistic ability are a given.)
Take a second and make a mental list.? If you wanted to take interesting and pause-worthy images, what would you do?
And after you posted the images on Facebook, imagine you?re looking over the shoulder of someone clicking through the album.? Which photos do they keep clicking through, and which photos make them stop, stare, and lean closer?
The same things that make for interesting photographs are the same things that create interesting writing.? Let?s look at just a few:
Photography 101, right?? Sure, you can shoot an entire event walking around with your camera at eye level ? you will get some great images.
But in addition to that -
What if you bend your knees?? Climb a staircase?? Lay down and shoot from the ground?? Shoot through glass?
Of course you don?t lie on the ground for the sake of lying on the ground ? it?s not as though that automatically makes an outstanding photo.? There has to be a reason.
But we all intuitively know that moving your feet and getting into just the right perspective for what you want to shoot is a component of interesting imagery.
Retelling something in the first person (?I went to the park, I love this family,? etc) is the written equivalent of walking around with your camera at eye level.? It?s one valid and useful way to do things.
But what happens if you take a different perspective??
What if you told the story of the family photoshoot from the perspective of the two-year-old?
What if you stepped outside the first person ?I? and wrote like you were the omniscient narrator of a novel (?she walked down the stairs and paused, as though she had just remembered something??)?
What if you abandoned sentences all together and captioned each image in a post with a single word?
Unexpected things make people stop and stare.? In images as well as in writing.?? Next time you post, try taking a different perspective.? Bend your knees or climb a staircase, so to speak.
Which gallery of party images would you rather browse:
An album full of 100 photos cataloguing the chairs, the walls, the ceiling, the face of each guest, the welcome sign, and the place cards?
Or ten images that sum up the event:
-Three high school friends reuniting for the first time in half a decade, two throwing their arms out to embrace each other while the third stands back and presses her hands to her smiling lips,
-A little girl, grinning impishly, stealing a piece of cake and looking back to see if her mother is watching
-I?m sure you can imagine the rest!
You know intuitively that telling a story of a party involves some scene-setting and showing off important details, yes.
But telling the story of the party also involves grabbing the key slices in time.? This is what makes you a good photographer ? putting yourself in the right place at the right time to capture just the right moment ? the one we know that will make people smile and say ?Yep, that?s so her?.?
Many blog posts describing shoots simply catalogue what happened.? We went to this place.? We took great photos.? We had so much fun.? I love this family.? The end.
It?s the equivalent of photographing the ceiling, the walls, the floor ? yes, we know that you probably went somewhere and had fun.? But what of it?? What happened?? Why was it fun?? Prove it!
We talk a good game about capturing moments with our cameras.? We can do the same thing with our words.? And the good news is, you?re already an expert at knowing which moments are good to capture.? The challenge is to simply describe them:
Instead of the ?We went here, we had fun? post, why not give the reader a single slice in time?
The little girl escaping mid-diaper change and running pantsless through the house,
the Dad who secretly wiped a tear away while he watched his wife and children playing,
the groom drawing a long, slow, breath as the first notes of the wedding march are played?
Recounting just one or two of the key moments for your readers can have more of an impact than giving a quick ?we did this, then we did that? overview of the day.
Humans like looking at faces.? From infancy, we prefer looking at faces or face-like things over other images.? Faces are a source of emotional and social information, they tell us what might happen next or what we should do.
We can understand facial expressions and emotions long before we have the words to describe them.? Facial and emotional cues are often the most useful sources of information to be had, and we are terribly interested in the emotions of others.
Capturing faces and emotions in photos might even be one of your main jobs.
Interestingly, even ?bad? photos still hold our attention if they capture emotion.
Have you ever had an image of a family member come out slightly blurry, but you kept it anyway because their facial expression meant something to you?
Have you ever shown a client a slightly sub-par image that turned out to be their favorite because of someone?s expression?? We prioritize emotion over many other things.
You can always make things more interesting by focusing on emotions.? The emotions you felt, the emotions you observed in others, the emotions you imagined others had.
Why do you think teasers for reality shows always show the most explosive emotional moments?? Because it?s the fastest way to draw someone in.
No, I don?t suggest that wedding photographers blog about the time the mother-in-law stormed out like a Kardashian (that blog post would generate a lot of traffic, guaranteed, but it wouldn?t be good for business).
But there are emotions present that are beyond just the mere labels we throw out ? things like ?they were happy? and ?the guests were thrilled.?
Instead, describe what you saw in the moment and allow the emotion to well up inside the reader.? Without ever labeling it all.
Simply describe the dad watching the bride walking down the aisle, and how his mind flashes back to helping her put worms on hooks in a leaky fishing boat when she was six, and he knows he?ll never get to do that again ? but at least she may get to do it with her own kids soon.? Allow the reader to fill in the emotional blanks ? you don?t need to tell them, they?ll understand it without you saying another word.
Use words to trace the facial expressions and the events behind them, and you?ll tap into a powerful source of magnetic material.
And the thing is, even if you can?t write it exactly ? the written equivalent of a blurry photo ? emotion can still come through.?
Even if you feel your pen can?t pull everything onto the page, can?t quite get the full effect of the leaky boat and the worm, or adequately put the gowned bride in the aisle ? the attempt still bears fruit.? Just as we can discern emotion from a blurry photo, we can pull it out of imperfect writing.? Try it out ? it will become clearer and crisper the more you practice, just like in your photos.
Observing.? Finding emotion.? Narrowing down to show the exact right moment.? Climbing around to find a new perspective.
You might be changing mediums, but the essentials are the same.? You?re further ahead of the game than you can perhaps imagine.

Ruben Studdard is competing in "The Biggest Loser" this fall.
Ruben Studdard is getting back into the reality TV game! The season two champ of ?American Idol? is joining the 15th season of ?The Biggest Loser? as one of its contestants when the weight-loss competition returns this fall.
This isn?t the Velvet Teddy Bear?s first attempt at shedding weight. According to People.com, the singer packed on an extra 100 pounds onto his already big frame after winning ?Idol.? He later teamed up with ?Extra? and a trainer to get in shape, but that lasted just two weeks. In 2006, he participated in a weight-loss program at Duke University in North Carolina and lost his post-?Idol? pounds.
?On both sides of my family, I have a family history of diabetes and high blood pressure and things of that nature,? a slimmer Studdard told TODAY host Meredith Viera in an October 2006 interview about his inspiration for getting healthy. ?I just wanted to basically combat those issues at an early age. They?ve never been an issue for me, but I wanted to do it while I was still young, and felt like working out and looking great.?
The singer told Viera that exercising was never an issue, especially since he went to college on a football scholarship. Instead, it was food that was the root of his weight issues.
?We?re from Alabama, we love to eat!? he said. ?So I basically had to change my thinking and as it pertains to the foods I wanted to eat. (Duke) put me on a 1,200 to 1,500 calorie diet a day. It ended up being pretty easy.?
He said that after leaving the Duke program, he even switched to a vegetarian diet to clean out his system.
But eventually, the weight came back.
He explained on ?The Wendy Williams Show? last June while promoting his fifth album that between the demise of his three-year marriage and the stress of owing hundreds of thousands in back taxes, he turned to food for comfort.
?I just started going out and kickin? it,? he told the talk-show host.
Now, Studdard?s ready to get back in shape with help from ?The Biggest Loser.?
?The Biggest Loser? kicks off season 15 on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. on NBC.

(Boston) - Anurag Singh, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at Boston University School of Medicine, has received an American Lung Association (ALA) Lung Cancer Discovery Grant to expand his research on targeted therapies for drug resistant cancers.
The Lung Cancer Discovery Grant, an award of $100,000 per year for up to two years, is the largest grant amount the ALA provides and is only given to two recipients annually. The highly competitive award is given to investigators focused on developing innovative medical treatments, advancing current treatment options or finding a cure for lung cancer through clinical, laboratory, epidemiological or any other kind of research.
Singh's lab studies global mechanisms that contribute to oncogene-driven cancer progression, focusing mainly on lung, pancreatic and colorectal cancers. The lab is particularly focused on the KRAS oncogene, which is mutated in one-third of lung cancers. He will utilize the grant money for research on strategies to clinically manage drug-resistant KRAS-mutant lung cancers, which are often found in patients with a history of cigarette smoking. KRAS-mutant lung cancers are very resistant to chemotherapeutic agents, resulting in a poor prognosis for those with these mutations, and a method of blocking KRAS protein function has not yet been discovered. Singh hypothesizes that interfering with the function of small non-coding microRNAs that are controlled by mutant KRAS may make therapeutic agents more effective in treating lung cancers.
Singh, who also is a faculty researcher in the BU/Boston Medical Center Cancer Center and the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, received his PhD in pharmacology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship and was an instructor at Massachusetts General Hospital with Harvard Medical School. Originally from Dartford, England, Singh currently resides in Malden, Mass.

Thanks to Linus Torvalds' figurative stroke of the pen, the Linux kernel 3.10 is now final -- paving the way for its inclusion in a bevy of Linux distributions, and even offshoots such as Android and Chrome OS. The fresh kernel brings a good number of changes, such as timerless multitasking, a new caching implementation and support for the ARM big.LITTLE architecture. In simplistic terms, the new multitasking method should help improve performance and latency by firing the system timer only once per second -- rather than 1,000 times -- when tasks are running. Meanwhile, users with both traditional hard drives and SSDs will find performance benefits from bcache, which brings writeback caching and a filesystem agnostic approach to leveraging the SSD for caching operations. Also of significance, Linux kernel 3.10 enhances ARM support by including the big.LITTLE architecture, which combines multiple cores of different types -- commonly the Cortex-A7 and Cortex-A15 -- that focus on either power savings or performance. The full list of improvements is rather lengthy, but if you feel like nerding out with the changelog, just grab a caffeinated beverage and get to it.
