Sexual satisfaction in women increases with age

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

A new study of sexually active older women has found that sexual satisfaction in women increases with age and those not engaging in sex are satisfied with their sex lives. A majority of study participants report frequent arousal and orgasm that continue into old age, despite low sexual desire. The study appears in the January issue of the American Journal of Medicine.

Researchers from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System evaluated sexual activity and satisfaction as reported by 806 older women who are part of the Rancho Bernardo Study (RBS) cohort, a group of women who live in a planned community near San Diego and whose health has been tracked for medical research for 40 years. The study measured the prevalence of current sexual activity; the characteristics associated with sexual activity including demographics, health, and hormone use; frequency of arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and pain during sexual intercourse; and sexual desire and satisfaction in older women.

The median age in the study was 67 years and 63% were postmenopausal. Half the respondents who reported having a partner had been sexually active in the last 4 weeks. The likelihood of sexual activity declined with increasing age. The majority of the sexually active women, 67.1%, achieved orgasm most of the time or always. The youngest and oldest women in the study reported the highest frequency of orgasm satisfaction.

40% of all women stated that they never or almost never felt sexual desire, and one third of the sexually active women reported low sexual desire. Lead investigator Elizabeth Barrett-Connor, MD, Distinguished Professor and Chief, Division of Epidemiology, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, comments, "Despite a correlation between sexual desire and other sexual function domains, only 1 in 5 sexually active women reported high sexual desire. Approximately half of the women aged 80 years or more reported arousal, lubrication, and orgasm most of the time, but rarely reported sexual desire. In contrast with traditional linear model in which desire precedes sex, these results suggest that women engage in sexual activity for multiple reasons, which may include affirmation or sustenance of a relationship."

Regardless of partner status or sexual activity, 61% of all women in this cohort were satisfied with their overall sex life. Although older age has been described as a significant predictor of low sexual satisfaction, the percentage of RBS sexually satisfied women actually increased with age, with approximately half of the women over 80 years old reporting sexual satisfaction almost always or always. Not only were the oldest women in this study the most satisfied overall, those who were recently sexually active experienced orgasm satisfaction rates similar to the youngest participants. "In this study, sexual activity was not always necessary for sexual satisfaction. Those who were not sexually active may have achieved sexual satisfaction through touching, caressing, or other intimacies developed over the course of a long relationship," says first author Susan Trompeter, MD, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine. Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Staff Physician at the VA San Diego Healthcare System.

"Emotional and physical closeness to the partner may be more important than experiencing orgasm. A more positive approach to female sexual health focusing on sexual satisfaction may be more beneficial to women than a focus limited to female sexual activity or dysfunction," Trompeter concludes.

Permanent vs. temporary tax cuts

One frequent criticism of the payroll tax cut is that because it is temporary,? it will have little effect on investments. However, depending on its length, it will still have an effect on shorter term investments.

One criticism against the payroll tax cut that has frequently been made from conservative and libertarian economists is that it is temporary, and because people supposedly make decisions on permanent conditions it will have no effect.

Skip to next paragraph Stefan Karlsson

Stefan is an economist currently working in Sweden.

Recent posts

This argument has a limited degree of truth in it as it is true that if taxation of investments are reduced by say 5 percentage points for one year, it will have less effect on investments that last more than a year than a "permanent" tax rate reduction of 5 percentage points. Just how great the difference is depends on how long the investment will last (the longer, the greater difference it makes).

However, because total after tax return still rises, it will still promote any investments that generates profits within a year.

Furthermore, the payroll tax reduction isn't about investments, at least not directly, it instead has a positive effect in the form of boosting labor supply, something that increases employment in part through a reduction in frictional unemployment and in part by lowering labor costs. Given the limited degree of wage rigidity that exists cutting the employer's share of the payroll tax cut would have been more effective, but

But don't businesses hire people based on long-term factors? Well, they often do, but there is no rational reason for them not take advantage of temporarily lower labor costs by hiring people temporarily given that America's flexible "hire and fire" laws makes it very easy and costless to fire employees.

Furthermore, it should be noted that no tax rate is really permanent (which is why I've put quotation marks around it except here) since they can, and very frequently have historically been change. While a "permanent" change is in the United States somewhat more difficult to change due to the fact that the two chambers of Congress and the President can usually block them if they want, that is as the historical record illustrates a difference of degree, not kind.

The real problem with temporary instead of "permanent" tax cuts isn't therefore so much that the short term effect is smaller. The real problem is that once the tax cuts expire, the positive effects will expire too, meaning that it will lower future growth, largely cancelling out the short term positive effect.

Capital Bikeshare Moves Forward Toward Corporate Sponsorship

WASHINGTON -- Capital Bikeshare is now moving forward with making the corporate sponsorship plan that was being considered in the fall a reality.

The Huffington Post caught up with two of the program's District Department of Transportation project managers, Chris Holben and Josh Moskowitz, who said that Capital Bikeshare has begun to map out who will advertise and how after receiving approval in May from the D.C. Council during city budget discussions.

Moskowitz explained that the program is in the process of writing what will likely be an Invitation for Bid, which will solicit prospective partners to submit proposals for potential advertising plans. Although details regarding the nature of the IFB are still being sketched out, Moskowitz said that it will likely be broken up into several components, including sign advertising and title sponsorship.

Where would the advertisements go? One plan is to change the two-sided map panels currently on display at each station, which feature a local map of nearby stations on one side and a larger regional map of the entire Capital Bikeshare network on the other. Moskowitz said that the regional maps would likely be nixed in favor of an advertising component.

As HuffPost reported in September, title sponsorship -- the naming rights to the program and visual branding -- are now being considered as major components.

"We envision being able to place your logo on the bike itself," Moskowitz said. "And then naming rights may also be something that we'll look at as well, depending on the offers. ... Price will be a significant metric that we look at in evaluating our proposals."

Moskowitz said the bikeshare system is open to any number of advertising schemes, which could include a plan to integrate promotions with the partner company into the program's daily operations.

There isn't a definitive timeline for when this will all happen, but advertising solicitation will likely be put out before any such thing for title sponsorship, and Moskowitz and his team are hoping to get things moving "as soon as possible." When finalized, advertising measures will only apply to bikes and stations in the District of Columbia because, Moskowitz said, "Arlington right now doesn't have the ability to do that legally," noting restrictions on bikeshare funding in the Virginia county, which is also part of the system.

The push for advertisers comes as Capital Bikeshare continues attempts to become financially sustainable.

Last winter, the program reduced the number of bikes available city-wide. "When we first started out the system last fall, it was two-thirds full of bikes," said Holben. "We realized for operational reasons that was too much." It lowered the dock-to-bike ratio from 66 percent to 50 percent, leaving the total number of bikes in the system at 1,144.

In November of last year, the program took a step further by upping up the price of a pass from $5 to $7.

Despite these measures, ridership has declined in recent months. Washington City Paper's Lydia DePillis recently took note:

I've got to say, it's not the weather. We've had an uncommonly mild fall and winter, with only a few unbikeably frigid days--on balance, no worse than the heat of the summer. ... It's true that tourism in D.C. is a highly seasonal business, and it looks like visitors might be a bigger part of the Bikeshare constituency than I, at least, had expected.

Holben downplayed the suggestion that enthusiasm for the program, which launched in September 2010, is beginning to taper off. "We're just starting our second year of service, so it's still pretty new of what is standard and what is the first year," he said. "We knew that usage would drop as the weather got colder and as the number of tourists in town decreases, which happens in fall and winter. This happened last year, too."

Unlike other cities with bikeshare programs -- including Boston, Minneapolis, Denver and Montreal -- D.C.'s remains open in winter, a decision influenced partly by the city's milder weather and its effective methods of snow removal. Although closing the program in colder months might save money, it was never something DDOT considered. "Usually, people are clamoring for the system to be open," Holben said.

Moskowitz is assured that ridership numbers will bounce back to what they were pre-chill.

"Certainly, I think as we approach the spring and summer months ... we're going to be able to meet and exceed the ridership numbers that we've seen." The financial bump from advertisers, he said, will help the program continue to thrive. "It will also give us the resources to continue to expand."

Last month, Montgomery County officials applied for a $1 million grant from the Maryland Department of Transportation that would bring 29 stations and 204 bikes to areas between the Capital Beltway and the Maryland-D.C. border, with stations in Bethesda, Friendship Heights/Chevy Chase, the Medical Center area, Silver Spring and Takoma Park.

In June, the county received a $1.3 million grant for stations outside the Beltway, in places like Rockville and the Shady Grove Metrorail station.

In September, Capital Bikeshare announced plans to install 32 additional docking stations in the District and another 30 in Arlington County, and a month later, it announced the system would expand to Alexandria.

Father: Thankful for passers-by who saved children (AP)

LOGAN, Utah ? Roger Andersen thought it was over.

The 46-year-old lost control of his car this weekend on a winding Utah canyon road and slid into an icy river, trapping his 9-year-old daughter Mia and 4-year-old son Baylor, along with their friend, 9-year-old Kenya Wildman. The car flipped upside-down and quickly became submerged.

"The first thought was, `So this is it how it ends," Andersen said while choking back tears Monday. "This could very easily have been a funeral for four of us."

But it wasn't, thanks to a handful of passers-by who stopped and within seconds, jumped into the frigid river to help.

"I was amazed at the people and the readiness of people to jump in and help," Anderson said at a news conference in Logan, about 80 miles north of Salt Lake City. "Without hesitation, they just did what they had to do ... And that ... for our family, made all the difference."

Andersen said they were on their way to a ski resort Saturday when the accident happened on a road they've traveled hundreds of times. The road didn't appear icy, at first, but as they made their way up the canyon, it got slicker so he slowed.

But just one tap on the brakes was all it took.

"In a second, I was completely off the road and sliding down the embankment," he said. "Within a second, the entire cabin of the vehicle was full of water."

He struggled to free the children from their seatbelts, but couldn't get them loose, and he had to breathe.

"I decided the best thing was to get out of the car and get air," he said. "In no less than 10 seconds, there were a half-dozen men standing on the banks of the river, and they're questions to me were, `Who else was in the car?'

"Within five seconds, there were eight men in the river ... ready to assist," he added.

The rescuers pulled the children one-by-one from the car and passed them up the river bank to others, where some performed CPR on two of them ? his children. They were unconscious and not breathing.

They all loaded up into a friend's SUV and sped down the mountain for help, but were met about halfway by paramedics, Andersen said. His two children were flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City, treated for hypothermia and released on Monday. The family friend also was treated and released.

"In a matter of a couple of days, now Baylor is running around just like nothing ever happened to him, and Mia is fine and Kenya is also fine," he said. "It's a story to me that is inspiring in many ways."

He said he will now learn more about how to help others.

"I need to do more so I can be at that level where I can step in and help people," Andersen said.

Kenya's father, Dennis Wildman, called it "a great story about the human spirit and our desire to help others."

He said the bystanders who didn't hesitate to help "literally brought our children home to us."

"We just want to say thank you," he said.

Former police officer Chris Willden was among the first on the scene. He said he shot out one of the car's window with his pistol to reach the trapped kids.

"I was trying to grab arms, but I couldn't feel anything," Willden said. "I'm thinking ... `What are we going to do?'"

He turned to see at least eight other people had scrambled down the 10-foot embankment along U.S. 89 to help.

"I remember thinking to myself, `You're going to see some dead kids, get ready,'" Willden said. "I've got three of my own and it was going to be (an awful) start to the New Year."

One of the girls had found an air pocket but was trapped by her seat belt. Willden cut it with a pocket knife and pulled her from the rear passenger window. The two other children soon followed.

Roger Andersen's wife, Mindy, fought to keep from crying Monday as she thanked the bystanders for saving the children's lives.

"Hero," she said, "is not even big enough for what they did."

Beyonce's Baby, Britney's Betrothal And More: 2012 Predictions1676621

We forecast the year that will be for your favorite stars, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Welcome to 2012, the year that will either bring us the end of civilization as we know it or perhaps flying cars (finally!) Of course, between those two events, there's also going to be a presidential election, the London Olympics and that last "Twilight" movie (finally x 100!), not to mention a whole lot of activity within the lives of your favorite stars, too: Babies, weddings, honorary doctorates in nanotechnology; this is the year it'll all happen.

Which is why, with the new year upon us, I've decided to get my Kreskin on with these predictions for 2012. Don't ask me to gaze deep into my crystal ball and try to foresee who'll win the White House or the World Series, because, seriously, if I knew that, don't you think I'd be wagering right now? Instead, I'm tackling the important topics. Here's my 2012 forecast for the Beyoncés and Britneys of the world ... partly cloudy, with a zero-percent chance of accuracy. » Beyoncé and Jay-Z will welcome a daughter, who, upon her, uh, release, will also release her debut single, "Run the World (Me)." » Adele will win every single Grammy, including a stunning upset of Eres Un Farsante in the Best Regional Mexican Or Tejano Album category. » Britney Spears and Jason Trawick will tie the knot in an elaborate, multi-denominational ceremony held — eh, I don't even care enough to finish this one. » Katy Perry, having finally run out of singles to release off Teenage Dream, will spend the entirety of 2012 shooting videos for objects around her house. Her hits will include "Toaster," "KitchenAid Tilt-Head Stand Mixer" and "This Towel Set Someone Gave Russell and I for Our Wedding That We Keep in the Guest Bathroom." » Dr. Dre will indefinitely scrap Detox and instead drop a more age-appropriate album called The Chronic Arthritis. » Lady Gaga will wear a crazy hat or something. » Rihanna will release six albums in 2012, each more raunchy than the last. Titles include Speculum, [Censored] [Censored] On My [Censored], and Songs About F---ing, which, oddly, will be a note-for-note remake of Big Black's Songs About F---ing. » Dave Grohl is sure to do something awesome. » Drake's sweater game will become so advanced that he will surpass Bill Cosby as the world's foremost expert on multi-hued knitwear. On a related note, he will also release a comedy album called To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With. » Nicki Minaj will stun the fashionistas when she appears at the annual Met Ball wearing a nice pantsuit she bought at Bealls. » Justin Bieber will finally get that bike without the training wheels, since he's a big boy now. » The Black Keys, buoyed by the success of their "Lonely Boy" video, will shoot another dance-only clip for "Gold on the Ceiling," this one set at Gallagher's 2000 and featuring nothing but topless women. Surprisingly, it will become the most-viewed music video in the history of everything. » Lil Wayne will come full circle, get a tattoo of his face on his face. » Guns N' Roses will reunite at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in April, only with that dude who plays a guitar shaped like a foot filling in for Slash and Tommy Stinson replacing Duff on bass. So, actually, it won't be Guns N' Roses at all. » Coldplay's Chris Martin is just going to be fingerpainting everything. » Rick Ross will be named the Memphis Restaurant Association's Restaurateur of the Year for his tremendous achievements in Wingstop-ery. » Kanye West will literally explode. » Fans of Skrillex will stop and realize that, in 1997, EDM was poised take over America too, and we ended up with Limp Bizkit as a result.

Credit card debt: Are consumers returning to bad habits?

Credit card debt increased an estimated $64 billion in 2011, far more than in the previous two years. Holiday shopping bills will swell credit card debt even more in early 2012.

Americans are edging back toward their bad old pre-recession habits, when they charged whatever they wanted on their credit cards and didn?t worry about the build up of debt. After starting 2011 by paying down over $32 billion in credit card debt, consumers are on track to end the year with a $64 billion increase in their net credit card debt, according to Card Hub?s latest survey of credit card debt.

That?s a far bigger increase than in either 2009 or 2010. Unfortunately, the situation in 2012 will worsen before it improves. You can thank the busy holiday shopping season for that. It occurs during the year?s fourth quarter, which is largely why the fourth quarter sees debt build up faster than in the second and third quarters combined.

Typically, Americans pay down their debt in the first quarter, buoyed by salary bonuses, tax refunds, and New Year?s resolutions. In 2009 and 2010, they paid down more in the first quarter than they ran up new debt through the end of the third quarter. The same cannot be said for 2011.

In the third quarter of 2011, consumer ran up 154 percent more credit card debt than they did in the same period a year earlier.

During the Great Recession, overleveraging (spending more than you bring in) caught up with consumers and companies alike as unemployment skyrocketed and revenue sources dried up and wreaked havoc on our economy. While current credit card debt is far from peak recession levels, the pace at which consumers are adding new debt foreshadows a return to such worrisome levels.

But improve, the situation surely can. Consumers have a number of options at their disposal, but the obvious first step in combating rising debt levels has to be budgeting.? It?s the ?obvious? first step, not necessarily an easy one. People who are consistently spending beyond their means need to excise spending from their lives, and this necessitates making tough choices.

Make a list of your monthly expenses and rate them based on importance, with things like food, housing, and insurance taking top priority.? Then cut the lowest ranked items until your spending is below your monthly income threshold with room to spare (you?ll want some savings for an emergency fund). After that, stick to your budget and work to pay down what you currently owe.

When it comes to sticking to a budget, you might find a debit card or a charge card more helpful than a credit card because they are better suited to instilling spending discipline. With a debit card, one can transfer the budgeted amount to a checking account and only spend that amount. Since charge cards do not allow you to carry a balance, you?re automatically insulated from spending more than you can afford to pay back.

On the other hand, if you don?t want to forgo credit cards because of their rewards and low introductory interest rates, you can do a couple of things to prevent overspending. One is to link your account with a checking account in order to impose the spending discipline you need. The other is to call your credit card company and get it to reduce your credit limit so as to be in line with your monthly budget. Confronting the problem of rising credit card debt with a credit card might seem rather ironic, but it is a problem that must be dealt with, so anything that can help should be welcomed.

At the end of the day, the worst thing you can do is ignore the situation until credit card debt becomes unmanageable and the problem becomes more difficult to solve.

? Odysseas Papadimitriou is CEO of Card Hub, a website where consumers can learn about and compare credit cards.
