Song Review ? ?Alone in Memphis? from Austin Lucas ? Saving ...

If you need any more validation that it is a new day in music, just sit back and appreciate that one Austin Lucas?the scrappy, heartfelt, post-punk songbird who migrated south to country not for support but from passion?is now signed to the prestigious New West Records and is label mates with the likes of Steve Earle, Corb Lund, and Patty Griffin. His new record Stay Reckless is slated for release on August 27th, and can be pre-ordered now.

austin-lucasPreceding Stay Reckless is a song established Austin Lucas fans will already know well from his live performances, whether experiencing it with a band like Tennessee?s Glossary backing him up, or Austin simply rocking the acoustic guitar solo like nobody else can. ?Alone In Memphis? typifies what makes Austin Lucas such a unique performer. You couldn?t coerce the country out of Austin?s voice for anything, and it has a smooth gentleness and a yearning that is both fragile and remarkably controlled. But Austin?s punk roots show when the song evolves into the full band concept, creating a divine mixture of influences that trace a template for how to evolve country music while still respecting its roots.

Whether electric or acoustic, Austin only knows one way to perform a song: with 100% passion, until the song?s inspiration manifests right there on stage and coats every word. Even if you hate the lyrics, or can?t connect to the story of ?Alone In Memphis,? it is written perfectly to pull the emotion right out of Austin every time and spill it out amongst the audience in a moment of shared reflection and commiseration on one of the most fundamental failings of the human condition?our inability to feel stable without the company of another.

Great songwriters know how to write to their strengths, and that is what Austin does in ?Alone in Memphis.?

Two guns up.

Study with mice provides insight into the mechanisms of human reproduction

This news release is available in French.

A protein first shown to function in the liver plays a crucial role in pregnancy in mice and has a key role in the human menstrual cycle, according to researchers at the University of Montreal. Mice that were genetically engineered not to produce the liver receptor homolog-1 (Lrh-1) molecule were unable to create the uterine conditions necessary for establishing and sustaining pregnancy, resulting in the formation of defective placentas. The researchers then showed that Lhr-1 was present in the human uterus and the essential processes related to the success of early gestation. "We previously showed that Lrh-1 is essential for ovulation. Our newest studies have revealed that it is plays an important role in the uterus, raising the possibility that Lrh-1 deficiency contributes to human gestational failure," explained lead author Bruce Murphy, of the university's Animal Reproduction Research Centre. "We worked with mice before looking at human tissues. I believe it premature to propose determination of Lrh-1 in uterine biopsies as a diagnostic tool, but we are working on determining the receptor's pattern of expression across the menstrual cycle."

The researchers also looked at whether hormone replacement therapy might restore normal uterine functions in the mice. "Progesterone did not make a difference. Although hormone therapy allowed for the embryos to implant, we saw problems with the lining in the uterus, compromised formation of the placenta, fetal growth retardation and fetal death," Murphy said. "However, there are new Lrh-1 agonists and antagonists, currently in clinical trials to treat hepatic consequences of type II diabetes, and thus therapeutic intervention might be possible."

The study was published in Nature Medicine on June 30, 2013, and was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Same-sex weddings under way in California after stay is lifted

Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, one of the couples who successfully challenged California's Proposition 8, marry in Los Angeles.

By Pete Williams and M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

The two couples who challenged?the law that had?barred same-sex marriage in California?were married Friday afternoon after a federal appeals court dissolved its stay blocking same-sex marriage in the state.

On the eve of San Francisco's Pride Weekend,?State Attorney General Kamala?declared Sandra Stier, 50, and Kris Perry,?48, "spouse and spouse" shortly before 5 p.m. (8 p.m. ET) at San Francisco City Hall. In their vows, the couple took each other as?"lawfully wedded wife."

"Right now, we feel really victorious and thrilled and relieved to be at the end of this long journey and just move forward like a regular married couple," Stier said in a conference call with reporters ? but not before she introduced Perry as "my beautiful wife."

Stier said she and Perry hadn't had time to schedule a honeymoon. But Perry said that after a celebration with "all of the people we love ... Sandy and I will go somewhere alone."

Jeff Chiu / AP

Kris Perry, left, kisses Sandra Stier as they are married Friday at San Francisco City Hall in a ceremony officiated by state Attorney General Kamala Harris.

?

About 90 minutes later in Los Angeles, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa married the other couple, Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, on his last day in office.?

The ceremony, Katami said, was "about celebrating our private commitment and our public connection."

Many state officials, including Harris and Gov. Jerry Brown, celebrated the decision Friday on Twitter:

San Francisco City Hall will stay open until 8 p.m. Friday and will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for marriage licenses. The Los Angeles County registrar and clerk's office said it was deputizing extra marriage commissioners and extending days and locations to accommodate an expected rush of weddings.

Gina Alcomendias, the clerk-recorder for Santa Clara County, said few people had shown up at the County Building because the appeals court's decision came late in the day.

But "we're going to be busy Monday, I think ? the whole week next week," Alcomendias told NBC Bay Area. "Probably for a long while."

The 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals lifted its stay two days after the Supreme Court declined to rule on Proposition 8, thereby upholding a lower court's decision overturning the ban.?The appeals court had blocked enforcement of that ruling pending the Supreme Court decision.

The justices also struck down?the Defense of Marriage Act, a 1996 federal law that barred recognition of same-sex marriages.

Supreme Court rulings generally don't take effect for 25 days. But Harris had called on the 9th Circuit to lift its stay as soon as possible Wednesday after Brown told the state's 58 counties to prepare for same-sex marriages.

Brown issued an order Friday afternoon making that official, declaring that "marriage licenses must be issued to same-sex couples immediately."

California Attorney General Kamala Harris instructs the Los Angeles County Clerk by telephone to begin same-sex marriages "immediately."

The Protect Marriage Coalition's?Proposition 8 Legal Defense Fund, which sponsored the ballot initiative, did not immediately return calls seeking comment. But in a statement, the group said it had been deprived of "our right to ask for reconsideration," calling the appeals court's decision an "outrageous act of judicial tyranny."

"Homosexual marriage is not happening because the people changed their mind," the group said in a statement. "It isn't happening because the appellate courts declared a new constitutional right. It's happening because enemies of the people have abused their power to manipulate the system and render the people voiceless."

Theodore Boutros, one of the plaintiffs' lawyers, said the appeals court was fully within its rights to lift its injunction, which simply restored the status quo in the circuit. Any attempt by opponents to seek reconsideration of the Supreme Court ruling is a separate matter, he said.

Protests near Mandela hospital over 'disappointment' Obama's South Africa trip

President Obama is heading to South Africa from Senegal as part of his African tour, where Nelson Mandela's daughter says he might visit Mandela if doctors approve. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.

By Stacey Klein and Ian Johnston, NBC News

Barack Obama said Friday that he did not need a ?photo op? with Nelson Mandela, saying the ?last thing? he wanted to do was be intrusive at a time when the anti-apartheid icon?s family are concerned about his health.

However, the president did not rule out a meeting with Mandela, whose ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela said Friday had made a ?great improvement? compared to a few days ago.

On Tuesday, Mandela's daughter Zindzi said that her father ?opened his eyes and gave me a smile? when she told him Obama was coming.

Speaking about her ex-husband Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela says, 'From what he was a few days ago, there is great improvement' in the former South African president's condition.

Speaking on Air Force One as he flew to South Africa from Senegal, Obama said that ?we?ll see what the situation is when we land.?

?I don't need photo op," he said. "The last thing I want to do is be intrusive at a time when the family is concerned? with Mandela?s condition.

He said the main message he wanted to deliver was ?profound gratitude? for Mandela?s leadership and to say that ?the thoughts and prayers of the American people are with him, his family and his country.?

This message could be delivered to his family and not directly to Mandela, the president said.

On Thursday, Obama said he had already had the "privilege of meeting Madiba [Mandela's clan name] and speaking to him."

"And he's a personal hero, but I don't think I'm unique in that regard," Obama added. "If and when he passes from this place, one thing I think we'll all know is that his legacy is one that will linger on throughout the ages."

Madikizela-Mandela, speaking outside Mandela's former home in the Johannesburg township of Soweto, said her ex-husband seemed to be getting better.

?I?m not a doctor but I can say that from what he was a few days ago there is great improvement," she said.

When asked by NBC News Special Correspondent Charlayne Hunter-Gault?whether the family would welcome a visit by Obama, Zindzi Mandela said Thursday she wasn't aware of any formal request. However, she added that decision would be left with doctors treating the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Ahead of his arrival in Johannesburg on Friday, an anti-Obama protest was held not far from the hospital where Mandela is being treated with one demonstrator claiming the U.S. president had been a ?disappointment.?

Siphiwe Sibeko / Reuters

Protesters protest the visit of President Barack Obama in Pretoria Friday. One said he viewed Obama as a "disappointment" and thought Nelson Mandela would too.

Reuters reported that nearly 1,000 trade unionists, Muslim activists, South African Communist Party members and others marched to the U.S. Embassy where they burned a U.S. flag, calling Obama's foreign policy ?arrogant and oppressive.?

"We had expectations of America's first black president. Knowing Africa's history, we expected more,? Khomotso Makola, a 19-year-old law student, told Reuters. He said Obama was a ?disappointment, I think Mandela too would be disappointed and feel let down.?

South African critics of Obama have focused in particular on his support for U.S. drone strikes overseas, which they say have killed hundreds of innocent civilians, and his failure to deliver on a pledge to close the U.S. military detention center at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba housing terrorism suspects.

However, Nigerian painter Sanusi Olatunji, 31, had brought portraits of both Mandela and Obama to add to a growing number of flowers, tribute notes and gifts outside the hospital.

?These are the two great men of my lifetime,? he told Reuters. ?To me, Mandela is a prophet who brought peace and opportunity. He made it possible for a black man like me to live in a country that was only for whites.?

In the latest statement on Mandela?s condition, South African President Jacob Zuma said the 94-year-old was ?much better? on Thursday than he had been the previous night. "The medical team continues to do a sterling job," he added.

A statement issued by Zuma?s office said he and Obama would hold ?crucial bilateral talks that will take forward relations between the two countries? on Saturday.

?South Africa values its warm and mutually beneficial relationship with the United States immensely. This is a significant visit which will take political, economic and people to people relations between the two countries to a higher level, while also enhancing cooperation between U.S. and the African continent at large,? it said.

The statement noted Obama?s visit was being made as South Africa prepares to celebrate ?20 years of freedom? ? 1994 saw the first elections in the country in which all its citizens were eligible to vote. Mandela voted for the first time in his life in that year and was elected the country?s first black president, serving until 1999.

?South Africa greatly appreciates the solidarity provided by the Anti-Apartheid Movement in the United States during the struggle for liberation,? the statement said.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Egyptian police officer shot dead in Sinai

CAIRO (Reuters) - A senior Egyptian police officer was shot dead by unknown gunmen who ambushed his car in the Sinai Peninsula town of El Arish on Saturday, security sources and state media said.

Armed groups have exploited a security vacuum in the Sinai, which borders Israel, since a 2011 uprising ousted president Hosni Mubarak. The mainly Islamist and Bedouin groups have kidnapped tourists and police to press the government for the release of jailed colleagues.

Three masked gunmen in a vehicle opened fire with automatic weapons on the officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Hani, as he returned from work on Saturday, state news agency MENA said. Hani's driver was seriously wounded, the report added.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear.

The interior minister ordered the formation of a team to comb the area and arrest the gunmen, MENA said, without naming any suspects.

Over the past few days violence has broken out across Egypt between supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Mursi ahead of opposition rallies planned for Sunday to demand the Islamist president's resignation.

At least three people were killed in protests on Friday, including a 21-year-old American student, and demonstrators have steeled themselves for more violence.

Spending cuts agreed in EU budget; US ambassador to China makes Tibet visit; South Korea and China meet to discuss North Korea's nuclear programme; Obama calls for gay rights during visit to Senegal; US begins shipping arms for Syrian rebels; and more

Top of the Agenda: EU's Budget Deal Includes First-Ever Spending Cuts

EU states and lawmakers reached a last-minute deal (FT) on Thursday on the hotly contested 2014?2020 budget after weeks of arduous negotiations. The ?960 billion package, down from the current ?994 billion budget cycle, included spending cuts for the first time (Bloomberg) as the region faces an ongoing recession and record unemployment. The breakthrough came just hours before leaders gathered in Brussels for a June summit focused on job creation (EUObserver), and will allow leaders to offer ?6 billion to tackle youth unemployment earlier than planned.

Analysis

"Once again, short-term national interests are taking precedence over the need for a forward-looking, flexible, and efficient EU budget. The European Parliament, which for the first time must approve the MFF [Multiannual Financial Framework], should use its newfound influence to uphold the EU-wide public interest and offset the blinkered, vested interests of individual member states," writes Guy Verhofstadt for Project Syndicate.

"It appears that under the new deal, the figures agreed will remain unchanged but, in a concession to the European Parliament, unspent money will be transferred from one year to the next, rather than returning to national budgets as at present," writes the BBC.

"When EU leaders convene for the European Council on Thursday, one of their priorities will be to find new ways to tackle youth unemployment. It is time politicians caught up with economic reality: with almost 15m under-30s who are neither in employment, education, nor training, Europe faces a generational crisis," writes an editorial for the Financial Times.

Iraq official says Baghdad open to US military aid

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq is open to greater American military cooperation as U.S. commanders explore ways to boost security assistance to the country, a top Iraqi official said Thursday.

The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, has recommended that military American commanders look for ways to help improve the military capabilities of Iraq and Lebanon, which both face the risk of spillover from the civil war in neighboring Syria.

Dempsey said Wednesday that the assistance would not involve sending U.S. combat troops, but could involve the U.S. sending in training teams and accelerating sales of weapons and equipment.

The last American combat troops left Iraq in December 2011, ending a nearly nine-year war that cost nearly 4,500 American and more than 100,000 Iraqi lives.

About 100 military and civilian Department of Defense personnel remain in Iraq as an arm of the American Embassy to act as liaisons with the Iraqi government and facilitate arms sales. The U.S. has similar offices in other countries.

Ali al-Moussawi, the media adviser for Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki, told The Associated Press that Baghdad would welcome increased arms sales and faster weapons deliveries along with U.S. training teams to help it confront rising regional instability and terrorist threats.

Iraq is struggling to contain a resurgent al-Qaida that is one of the main drivers behind the country's worst uptick in violence in half a decade. More than 2,000 people have been killed in car bombings and other violent attacks in Iraq since the start of April.

"We welcome this kind of cooperation and we consider it a part of the existing agreement between us," al-Moussawi said when asked about Dempsey's comments.

"Because of the high risks the region faces, I think there should be bigger cooperation and coordination between all countries threatened by terrorism."

Iraqi fighters have traveled to fight on both sides of Syria's civil war. The Iraqi branch of al-Qaida is pushing to make itself a player in the conflict, and now calls itself the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to highlight its cross-border ambitions.

Iraq has acquired billions of dollars' worth of American-made military equipment, including howitzers, armored personnel carriers and Abrams tanks in recent years.

It has yet to receive the first of as many as 36 F-16 fighter jets it has ordered, and Baghdad has been pressing U.S. officials to speed delivery of the warplanes.

Also on Thursday, a spokesman for Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission said a voting list backed by influential Sunni politicians has won the biggest single bloc of seats in provincial elections in the Sunni-dominated province of Anbar.

Safaa al-Moussawi, a spokesman for the Independent High Electoral commission, said the United list led by Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi won 8 of 30 seats in Anbar's provincial council. A bloc backed by al-Maliki came in second with five seats.

The western province of Anbar, a former al-Qaida stronghold, has been the center of anti-government rallies protesting what Sunnis say is their second-class treatment by the Shiite-led government.

Residents in Anbar and neighboring Ninevah province voted last week in local elections that had been delayed due to security concerns.

PFT: Cops impound SUV believed used in '12 murder

Aaron Hernandez, Michael FeeAP

At at time when the authorities and the Patriots have taken stunning and decisive action against Aaron Hernandez, the National Football League has done nothing.

The NFL will continue to do nothing, until it has a reason to do something.

?NFL clubs were advised today that if Aaron Hernandez enters into a player contract prior to the resolution of the charges pending against him, the contract will not be approved or take effect until Commissioner Roger Goodell holds a hearing,? the league said in a statement forwarded to PFT by NFL spokesman Greg Aiello.? ?The purpose of the hearing would be to determine whether Hernandez should be suspended or face other action prior to the charges being resolved.?

The league?s position makes sense.? Why suspend a guy who is unemployed, and currently unemployable?? The league?s stance makes teams even less likely to be interested in Hernandez, since it makes clear that, if anyone tries to give the guy a job, they?ll first have to deal with persuading Goodell to let them employ Hernandez.

As a result, Hernandez?s status won?t be relevant unless and until he is cleared on murder charges.? And things could get interesting if he?s acquitted in an O.J. Simpson-style outcome, where half of the country or more believes that, even though he was found not guilty, he still did it.

Violent birth of neutron stars: Computer simulations confirm sloshing and spiral motions as stellar matter falls inward

June 27, 2013 ? A team of researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics conducted the most expensive and most elaborate computer simulations so far to study the formation of neutron stars at the center of collapsing stars with unprecedented accuracy. These worldwide first three-dimensional models with a detailed treatment of all important physical effects confirm that extremely violent, hugely asymmetric sloshing and spiral motions occur when the stellar matter falls towards the center. The results of the simulations thus lend support to basic perceptions of the dynamical processes that are involved when a star explodes as supernova.

Stars with more than eight to ten times the mass of our Sun end their lives in a gigantic explosion, in which the stellar gas is expelled into the surrounding space with enormous power. Such supernovae belong to the most energetic and brightest phenomena in the universe and can outshine a whole galaxy for weeks. They are the cosmic origin of chemical elements like carbon, oxygen, silicon, and iron, of which Earth and our bodies are made of, and which are bred in massive stars over millions of years or freshly fused in the stellar explosion.

Supernovae are also the birth places of neutron stars, those extraordinarily exotic, compact stellar remnants, in which about 1.5 times the mass of our Sun is compressed to a sphere with the diameter of Munich. This happens within fractions of a second when the stellar core implodes due to the strong gravity of its own mass. The catastrophic collapse is stopped only when the density of atomic nuclei -- gargantuan 300 million tons in a sugar cube -- is exceeded.

What, however, causes the disruption of the star? How can the implosion of the stellar core be reversed to an explosion? The exact processes are still a matter of intense research. According to the most widely favored scenario, neutrinos, mysterious elementary particles, play a crucial role. These neutrinos are produced and radiated in tremendous numbers at the extreme temperatures and densities in the collapsing stellar core and nascent neutron star. Like the thermal radiation of a heater they heat the gas surrounding the hot neutron star and thus could "ignite" the explosion. In this scenario the neutrinos pump energy into the stellar gas and build up pressure until a shock wave is accelerated to disrupt the star in a supernova. But does this theoretical idea really work? Is it the explanation of the still enigmatic mechanism driving the explosion?

Unfortunately (or luckily!) the processes in the center of exploding stars cannot be reproduced in the laboratory and many solar masses of intransparent stellar gas obscure our view into the deep interior of supernovae. Research is therefore strongly dependent on most sophisticated and challenging computer simulations, in which the complex mathematical equations are solved that describe the motion of the stellar gas and the physical processes that occur at the extreme conditions in the collapsing stellar core. For this task the most powerful existing supercomputers are used, but still it has been possible to conduct such calculations only with radical and crude simplifications until recently. If, for example, the crucial effects of neutrinos were included in some detailed treatment, the computer simulations could only be performed in two dimensions, which means that the star in the models was assumed to have an artificial rotational symmetry around an axis.

Thanks to support from the Rechenzentrum Garching (RZG) in developing a particularly efficient and fast computer program, access to most powerful supercomputers, and a computer time award of nearly 150 million processor hours, which is the greatest contingent so far granted by the "Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE)" initiative of the European Union, the team of researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA) in Garching could now for the first time simulate the processes in collapsing stars in three dimensions and with a sophisticated description of all relevant physics.

"For this purpose we used nearly 16,000 processor cores in parallel mode, but still a single model run took about 4.5 months of continuous computing," says PhD student Florian Hanke, who performed the simulations. Only two computing centers in Europe were able to provide sufficiently powerful machines for such long periods of time, namely CURIE at Tr?s Grand Centre de calcul (TGCC) du CEA near Paris and SuperMUC at the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum (LRZ) in Munich/Garching.

Many Terabytes of simulation data (1 Terabyte are thousand billion bytes) had to be analysed and visualized before the researchers could grasp the essence of their model runs. What they saw caused excitement as well as astonishment. The stellar gas did not only exhibit the violent bubbling and seething with the characteristic rising mushroom-like plumes driven by neutrino heating in close similarity to what can be observed in boiling water. (This process is called convection.) The scientists also found powerful, large sloshing motions, which temporarily switch over to rapid, strong rotational motions. Such a behavior had been known before and had been named "Standing Accretion Shock Instability," or SASI. This term expresses the fact that the initial sphericity of the supernova shock wave is spontaneously broken, because the shock develops large-amplitude, pulsating asymmetries by the oscillatory growth of initially small, random seed perturbations. So far, however, this had been found only in simplified and incomplete model simulations.

"My colleague Thierry Foglizzo at the Service d' Astrophysique des CEA-Saclay near Paris has obtained a detailed understanding of the growth conditions of this instability," explains Hans-Thomas Janka, the head of the research team. "He has constructed an experiment, in which a hydraulic jump in a circular water flow exhibits pulsational asymmetries in close analogy to the shock front in the collapsing matter of the supernova core." This phenomenon was named "SWASI" ("Shallow Water Analogue of Shock Instability") and allows one to demonstrate dynamical processes in the deep interior of a dying star by a relatively simple and inexpensive experimental setup of table size, of course without accounting for the important effects of neutrino heating. For this reason many astrophysicists had been sceptical that this instability indeed occurs in collapsing stars.

The Garching team could now demonstrate for the first time unambiguously that the SASI also plays an important role in the so far most realistic computer models. "It does not only govern the mass motions in the supernova core but it also imposes characteristic signatures on the neutrino and gravitational-wave emission, which will be measurable for a future Galactic supernova. Moreover, it may lead to strong asymmetries of the stellar explosion, in course of which the newly formed neutron star will receive a large kick and spin," describes team member Bernhard M?ller the most significant consequences of such dynamical processes in the supernova core.

The researchers now plan to explore in more detail the measurable effects connected to the SASI and to sharpen their predictions of associated signals. Moreover, they plan to perform more and longer simulations to understand how the instability acts together with neutrino heating and enhances the efficiency of the latter. The goal is to ultimately clarify whether this conspiracy is the long-searched mechanism that triggers the supernova explosion and thus leaves behind the neutron star as compact remnant.

Android App Video Review: Despicable Me

In anticipation of the Despicable Me sequel, we've got a great new runner tie-in game from Gameloft. Yes, you heard all of that correctly. It's a movie tie in game that is actually good, if in a tired and overdone genre, and it was indeed developed by Gameloft. Being set in such a hilariously charming universe like Despicable Me certainly doesn't hurt. The game is called Despicable Me, and it is loads of fun, not to mention free.

You play as a random ambitious minion of the super villain Gru, trying to win that coveted minion of the year award by being as despicable as humanly possible. You do this by doing nasty things to other minions as you run, mainly just by knocking into them and sending them flying to their doom. This all adds to your Despicable Multiplier, which is our score multiplier for the game. As you run, you'll also collect loads of bananas, as currency to be spent on power-ups and costumes.

This is a three lane switching runner, like Agent Dash. Despite being in such an overdone genre, it's really very fun and fresh. Unexpected things happen constantly, as new obstacles or enemies are introduced at a moment's notice and you just have to roll with it. Whether you're doing battle with Vector, riding Fluffy Unicorn to collect loads of bananas, or smashing everything in sight as the massive mega minion, there is always something patently insane and absurd going on, and it always keeps ?a smile on your face.

There are two areas to enjoy. Gru's neighborhood, and Gru's lab. Each come with loads of unique settings and obstacles, and there is even an exclusive new villain to fight, created just for this game. As you play and unlock achievements, you can redeem those achievements for Despicable Coins, which let you purchase revives, bypass difficult objectives and much more. They are essentially the premium currency of this game, and yes, all the currencies can be purchased in-app if you choose. But thankfully, Gameloft toned it down on pushing them in your face, though they do push the social Facebook connectivity like nobody's business. In the end, this is just another runner, but it's so well done and set in such an entertaining universe, that it's actually worth playing! And again, it's totally free, and actually feels free.

Past US ambassador troubled by embassy security

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? As President Barack Obama prepares to visit East Africa, nearly 15 years after terrorists bombed two U.S. embassies here, a former U.S. ambassador to Kenya says he worries that security at the Nairobi embassy has become "complacent."

Obama is scheduled on Monday to visit Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital of Tanzania, which along with Nairobi was the site of near-simultaneous embassy attacks in August 1998. The bombings combined killed 224 people, mostly Kenyans. A dozen Americans died.

Scott Gration, the immediate past U.S. ambassador in Nairobi and a retired U.S. Air Force major general, said that during one period of his yearlong tenure as ambassador he didn't think that security was had the priority it should have been given. He said he thinks the problem has been rectified.

Sorry Uber, Los Angeles Has Been Banning Ride-Shares For a Century

Sorry Uber, Los Angeles Has Been Banning Ride-Shares For a Century

This week the city of Los Angeles sent a cease-and-desist letter to ride-sharing app companies Uber, Lyft and Sidecar. The city claims that these services are "rogue taxis" that are "bypassing all safety regulations created to protect riders and drivers." But this isn't the first time that this town has gone after the unregulated four-wheeled menace. This crackdown on unlicensed taxis in the City of Angels is nearly identical to a battle that raged a century ago ? without all the iPhones and whatnot, of course.

In 1914, an idea emerged in Los Angeles that would rapidly sweep the city in just a few short months: the jitney. Jitney was slang for "nickel" and for that low, low price (about $1.10 adjusted for inflation) you could catch a ride with a friendly Angeleno driver who would take you wherever you needed to go.

The very first known jitney driver took to the L.A. streets in the summer of 1914, and by 1915 there were about 700 jitney cars carrying 150,000 people per day around the city. But this disruption of the transportation industry didn't just stay contained to Los Angeles. The idea quickly swept the country, with jitney cars and buses popping up all around major cities in the U.S.

Needless to say, the established transportation companies (mainly in the form of railcars and trolleys) were not too happy about these wheel-bound disruptors. It took a few years, but thanks to a crackdown by the mayor, the jitney cars were pretty much non-existent in L.A. by 1918. Nationally, the jitney's numbers had been cut back by 90% that same year.

It's still too soon to tell if ride-sharing apps like Uber, Lyft and Sidecar will meet the same fate as the jitney. But as we learn time and again, there's nothing new in Hollywood.

You can read my entire story on the rise and fall of the jitney at Pacific Standard.

Armed resistance reemerging in Kashmir

India's prime minister toured the disputed region a day after one of the deadliest attacks on Indian forces in years. India is talking up development, but political dialogue is lacking.

By Zahid Rafiq,?Correspondent / June 25, 2013

India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, center with blue turban, is greeted by Chief Postmaster General John Samuel, right presenting a bouquet, during the release of a postal stamp of Kashmiri poet Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Mehjoor, in Srinagar, India, June 25. Shops, businesses ,and schools were closed in Indian-controlled Kashmir after separatist groups called for a strike Tuesday to protest a visit by the Indian prime minister to the disputed Himalayan region.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh went on with a planned visit to the deserted and barricaded city of Srinagar in Indian-held Kashmir a day after two militants attacked an Indian Army convoy here.

Eight soldiers were killed and 14 were injured in the attack, making it one of the deadliest in the resurgent Kashmiri insurgency that is slowly and deftly reemerging on Kashmir?s landscape.?

After a substantial phase of people?s disenchantment with violence and a gradual movement away from an armed struggle toward nonviolent protests and social media campaigns, the gun seems to be returning to the center stage of Kashmir?s fight against Indian rule. New Delhi missed an opportunity to engage with a changed environment where the focus was on nonviolence and instead started terming the absence of violence as peace and silence of guns as Kashmir?s acceptance of the Indian rule.?

The attack yesterday came a day after the killing of two policemen who were shot dead from close range by unidentified gunmen in Srinagar?s busy business hub. This year so far has already seen the death of more than 25 armed forces personnel in the territory, and a much more sophisticated militancy appears to be active in the Kashmir Valley. According to the police and Army, many of these new militants are local Kashmiri youth and they are carrying out a lot of the operations now.?

?Before the Arab Spring, in 2008 and 2010, half a million Kashmiri people marched peacefully on the streets of Kashmir, seeking a solution to the Kashmir dispute and asking freedom from Indian rule. Not a single armed forces personnel was killed in these protests, but the Indian state responded with imposing curfews, stopping the Internet service, and killing more than 170 young unarmed boys, and wounding thousands,? says Asif Ahmad, a young computer science graduate, who was part of these protests and had felt that some solution was finally on its way.

?But nothing happened. Absolutely nothing. Other than thousands of young boys being send to prison for protesting and even for what they posted on facebook,? he says. ?

India has pursued a counterinsurgency strategy that merges police surveillance and crackdowns with local elections, jobs programs, and some development. Mr. Singh visited Kashmir today to inaugurate a rail line that will eventually link the Kashmir Valley with India ? part of New Delhi's hopes of more fully integrating the disputed region with India. The relative peace of the last few years has also paid nongovernmental dividends in the form of skyrocketing tourism from India.

Yet India has made few movements toward a political process to address the long-standing Kashmir dispute.?

The Himalayan region is claimed fully by both India and Pakistan, and is de facto divided by the two countries along a military Line of Control. Many Kashmiris, particularly Muslims in the Kashmir Valley, want the right to self-determination to join with India or Pakistan or to be independent. A bloody mass armed uprising, supported by militants from Pakistan, raged from 1989 into the past decade against India, which responded by maintaining more than half a million forces in the region with immunity from the law. The conflict has left some 70,000 people dead, mostly civilian.

In recent years, India has carried on a slow dialogue with Pakistan that has included some initiatives aimed at boosting trade and travel links between the two countries. But India's public outreach to Kashmiris themselves was limited to a listening tour of the region by three "interlocutors" whose recommendations for a dialogue with separatists, among other steps, went nowhere.?

Without any political process to look to, there is an immense sense of siege in Kashmir and the hopelessness among the youth has increased even more after they witnessed the same violent response from the Indian state for throwing stones and chanting slogans as for picking up arms.?

?The militancy had almost come to an end, and even I had thought that it was a phase that is now over. But Kashmir is a political problem, and violent and nonviolent means are only an expression of the political resentment and aspiration among the Kashmiris,? says Noor Ahmad Baba, a political science professor at Kashmir University.

Professor Baba was himself a young man during the 1990s when militancy was at its peak in Kashmir, and he feels that this is an altogether new kind of militancy that is coming up. ?That time it was a mass movement and everyone picked up gun in anger and passion without knowing what it meant and what it entailed. Now it is much more sophisticated and professional, this one is going to be different,? says Baba.

Hizbul Mujahideen, a militant outfit based in Pakistan-held-Kashmir and one of the oldest organizations fighting in the region, claimed the attack on the convoy. ?The attack was carried out by special squad of the outfit and our militants reached their hideouts safely,? HM?s operational spokesperson Baleeg-u-Din told a local Kashmiri news agency last night.

Online Marketing And You: How To Promote Your Business Online

Some business ventures explode in popularity, while others remain small, owner-run shops. However, some small businesses simply fade away. Internet businesses tend to fold at a high rate. By using these tips in this article, you will learn how Internet promotion can prevent that failure.

When marketing online it is important to try every avenue to maximize profits. A company that fails to take advantage of the newest technology and trends may not appear competent or credible in the eyes of prospective customers. If you adopt new technologies quickly, you will present a better image to your customers.

You need to create a great site before worrying about getting it ranked. This needs to be the beginning step for anyone who is creating an online business. Attention to detail is important when creating your site. The effort that you put into making your site look great and work smoothly will pay off, as you will have less work to do down the road.

Consider creating a section on your website for frequently asked questions. It will also please your potential customers because they will be able to locate answers to their concerns quickly and easily. WIth more information, your visitors are more likely to become customers.

Website marketing campaigns should encourage growth of this strategy. While this may sound a little odd, you want a continuing cycle of customers who search, find your site, make a purchase, and then repeat the cycle.

Internet promotion has a lot of similar characteristics as other consumer markets, but can also have dramatic differences in key areas. As an example, the way search engines focus on title tags could be changed at any time. If this happened, you would need to be prepared to consider your other options, such as a viral video marketing effort.

When you are writing your marketing copy, make use of HTML tags that emphasize certain words or phrases. Augment the power of a term or phrase by changing it to italics, underlined, or bold text. This can assist you in clarifying your message and help show your customers what your company is about.

You may want to read psychological studies about online marketing and web design. Your brand can be affected by psychological factors based on the theme, outlay and color of your website. Understanding this information can prove very crucial towards maximizing your overall profit.

Know your audience, and what kinds of things they want in a website. When you have focused on your target market, it will be easy to offer them relevant content that keeps them coming back.

Keep customers coming back by sending coupons with every purchase. People appreciate these coupons and free samples, and as a result, they are more likely to check out your website again, which leads to more sales.

For any business site that sells a large amount of products, it?s crucial to have third-party transaction security. Many different companies offer a variety of secure services. McAffee, VeriSign, etc. will safeguard the financial exposure of both vendor and customer. These systems will add to your budget, but can help your business grow in the long term.

Learn from others? mistakes and make their failure work to your advantage. Develop your marketing with some of the suggestions above, and you will be ready to take the next steps in your company?s online success.
