CNN edges up in its battle with MSNBC (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Next year could be a critical one for CNN in the battle for second place, if the final 2011 cable news ratings are any indication.

Now fully in for 2010, the Nielsen numbers show Fox News safely ensconced in the top spot -- a place it has now occupied for nearly 10 years -- but the gap between its two counterparts narrowing.

MSNBC maintained its dominance in primetime, besting CNN during the three-hour block in the adults 25-54 demo for the third straight year (242,000 to 222,000) and in total viewers for the second straight year (775,000 to 689,000).

But CNN, coming off its worst year in more than a decade, rebounded slightly, maintaining its lead in total day viewers (479,000 to 435,000) and reclaiming the total day demo (160,000 to 148,000).

2011 was still the network's second-worst year this millennium, but an improvement over a far more troublesome 2010.

The jostling between the two rivals escalated in the second half of the year as CNN seemed to finally surge in September and October, notching a rare win in the demo during primetime -- much of that because the network hosted more of the often-incendiary GOP debates.

But by November, after flipping Lawrence O'Donnell and Ed Schultz in its primetime lineup, MSNBC was back on top, even passing CNN in total day viewers.

MSNBC President Phil Griffin has spent the past year championing his network's triumphs over CNN and trying to refocus the narrative on chasing Fox.

His network has ascended over the past few years, propelled by a shift in identity -- it is now a home for "progressives" -- and by the 2008 election. Its goal for next year: to chip away at Fox's heavy suit of armor.

It won't be easy. Though Fox's viewership declined by 8 percent this year, its top 11 shows still drew more than a million viewers -- a threshold nothing on MSNBC or CNN crossed.

That MSNBC still trumpets its victories over CNN more than it compares numbers with Fox signals that its older rival remains a concern, particularly in an election year.

CNN, meanwhile, has had its own inner struggles. In the past year, it has changed presidents -- from John Klein to Ken Jautz -- and remade its nightly lineup -- hiring Piers Morgan and Erin Burnett while waving goodbye to Larry King and Eliot Spitzer.

Yet 2011, replete with international news, lifted the network just in time for an election year.

Last time there was a presidential election, CNN posted its best ratings ever. This time around, it will find out whether it has found a winning formula.

One would have to imagine that CNN has a new show in mind for primetime. Anderson Cooper still airs at both 8 p.m., where he finished in fourth place, and 10 p.m., where the show excels.

However it shakes out, this year's ratings are a prequel. Though popular enthusiasm for the 2012 election may fail to match the heights of 2008, there will be no greater test of the balance of power.

German industry mogul Werner Otto dies at 102 (AP)

BERLIN ? Werner Otto, the founder of the mail-order company that bears his name and a prominent figure in West Germany's post-World War II economic resurgence, has died. He was 102.

The company, Otto Group, said Tuesday that he died in Berlin on Dec. 21 in the presence of his family.

Otto opened a shoe factory in Hamburg in 1945, but it didn't last long in the face of tough competition from southern Germany.

So in 1949, with four employees, he turned to selling shoes by mail order ? the start of what became Otto Group, which now employs 50,000 people and has annual revenues of euro11.4 billion ($14.9 billion).

Its first, hand-produced, catalog appeared in 1950, offering 28 styles of shoes. The business then grew rapidly during the 1950s, expanding its range and establishing itself with the help of shoppers from outside major cities who didn't have ready access to stores; in 1963, Otto introduced telephone orders and went online in 1995.

Otto handed over the company's operational management in 1965 and founded another enterprise, ECE, which builds and manages shopping malls in Europe.

He also set up Paramount Group, Inc., to invest in U.S. real estate.

Otto dedicated himself to a range of social causes, including his Werner Otto Foundation, founded in 1969, which supports medical research.

Among other projects, his company said he also donated a new museum building to Harvard University, the Werner Otto Hall, to showcase expressionist art from the German-speaking world.

Otto was born in the eastern German town of Seelow on Aug. 13, 1909, the son of a merchant.

He is survived by his third wife, Maren, and his five children. His oldest son, Michael, is now Otto Group's supervisory board chairman and his youngest son, Alexander, is the chief executive of ECE.

REPEAT-BMO: Keep a Close Eye on Debt Levels During Holiday Shopping Season

TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/26/11 -- With the holidays in full-swing, BMO Bank of Montreal today released tips on how to keep debt levels in check over the holiday season.

Following the comments Monday by Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney, BMO offered Canadians tips on how to keep debt levels in check over the holiday season.

"With the holiday shopping season in full swing, consumer spending is likely higher than normal among Canadian households," said Su McVey, Vice President, Customer Communications & Marketing, BMO Bank of Montreal. "Especially at this time of the year, consumers need to be prudent and watchful in regards to their finances and keep in mind the importance of proper debt management, including credit card spending, to avoid any harsh surprises in the New Year."

"Canadian households continued to amass more debt in the third quarter of 2011, now totalling more than $1.6 trillion or 151 per cent of personal disposable income - both record-high levels," said Michael Gregory, Senior Economist, BMO Capital Markets. "Abnormally low interest rates have kept these elevated debt burdens very manageable, for now. But, Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney has been warning Canadians to be cautious with their credit demands as 'more normal' interest rates will eventually return."

BMO Bank of Montreal offers these 4 tips to avoid over-spending over the holiday season:

-- Create a budget and stick to it - Spend less than you make. Develop a

budget that establishes how household expenses will be paid and how

spending will be managed. Take advantage of free online tools, such as

BMO MoneyLogic?, to help stay on top of everyday household spending

and saving.

-- Manage credit card debt - Pay down credit cards, beginning with those

that carry the highest rate, and consider using a low rate card for

purchases. For instance, the BMO Preferred Rate MasterCard offers a low

rate of 11.9 per cent for an annual fee of $20 per year.

-- Have a back-up plan - Plan ahead and develop a fall back plan in case

you are unable to meet your financial obligations due to unexpected

circumstances, such as loss of work, or damage to personal property,

including your home or vehicle.

-- Invest to save - Set up a Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) or high

interest savings account such as the BMO Smart Saver Account to set

aside extra cash in case of an emergency.

BMO experts are available to discuss ways Canadians can deal with debt and manage spending and savings.

No. 6: Chivas USA coach Robin Fraser

Counting down the top 11 personalities of 2011 in Southern California soccer ...

Those familiar with Robin Fraser -- from his time as a U.S. national-teamer and one of the best defenders ever to play in Major League Soccer to his stint assisting Jason Kreis' rebuild of Real Salt Lake into a powerhouse -- knew what Chivas USA was getting when the club decided last January who would lead its team into the future.

The future looks good.

Fraser represented a do-over for L.A.'s second Major League Soccer club, which had been forced to remake once before, under Bob Bradley, after horrendous missteps in its formation and during the inaugural season.

11 FROM '11

French ESPNLA soccer blogger Scott French recounts the top 11 stories and personalities in 2011 from the world of Southern California soccer.
Football Futbol Soccer ?

The Goats were one of the best teams in the league in four seasons under Bradley and Preki, his successor, but Martin Vasquez was left with a virtually empty cupboard -- and none of the team's previous leaders -- when he was put in charge for 2010.

Vasquez, now Jurgen Klinsmann's top assistant with the U.S. national team, was chased off following that season to start a front-office makeover that has evolved into a cultural shift, still progressing (and not entirely painless), within the institution. The appointment of Fraser and of chief assistant coach Greg Vanney gave this new culture definition and identity, and the work they put forth -- no matter the team's on-field struggles -- ought to bring rewards shortly.

Fraser, a former Galaxy star and two-time MLS Defender of the Year who turned 45 earlier this month, is a serious and diligent man, a realist whose cerebral approach guided his season-long (and continuing), piece-by-piece roster upgrade. The team hovered around .500, in the mix for a playoff berth, until a seven-game winless stretch (featuring four straight losses) in August and September took them out of it.

The work isn't finished.

?This is going to be a process,? Fraser acknowledged last spring. ?I think you want the process over yesterday, and the truth is that the process takes a long time. ...

?It's a never-ending process. You're never satisfied. If you think the process is over, then you may as well retire and be done, because you've stopped being open-minded and you've stopped looking for answers, and I think you can never get to that point, because there's always somewhere someone else can be doing it better. Unless you're Pep Guardiola and you're Barcelona, maybe.?

What does it take to build a team the right way?

?It's interesting, because I think the right mix of players is so much more than a talented group. It's the personalities, it's the leadership, it's attacking- vs. defensive-minded players and how they mesh and how many you have on the field of each. There's so many different things.

?And when you're close to being completely satisfied -- and maybe you never actually get to that point -- you've got that good balance of all those things.?

Lee is part of an 18-person group allowed by South Korea to attend the Dec. 28 funeral of late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. (AP Photo)

(AP) ? North Korea's next leader burnished his diplomatic skills, welcoming a private South Korean mourning delegation as state media called Kim Jong Un a "sagacious" leader and revealed a new title that gives him authority over political matters.

Kim Jong Un has rapidly gained prominence since the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, on Dec. 17, and his brief meeting with a group led by a former South Korean first lady and a prominent business leader shows Seoul that he is assured in his new role.

State media have showered Kim with new titles. On Saturday, the North referred to him as "supreme leader" of the 1.2 million-strong armed forces and said the military's top leaders had pledged their loyalty to him. On Monday, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper described him as head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party ? a post that appears to make him the top official in the ruling party.

Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency also called Kim Jong Un a "sagacious leader" and "dear" comrade while reporting that he paid respects Monday to his father, whose body is lying in state at Kumsusan Memorial Palace. State media have already dubbed him as a "great successor" and an "outstanding leader."

It was the fourth time the North's media reported that the younger Kim had visited the memorial palace since his father's death, according to Seoul's Unification Ministry.

Also on Monday, a South Korean delegation stood in a line on a red carpet and bowed silently during their visit to the Kumsusan palace, where Kim's bier is surrounded by flowers and flanked by an honor guard.

Kim Jong Un gave the South Koreans his thanks after they expressed condolences and sympathy, KCNA said. Seoul's Unification Ministry confirmed the meeting in a statement but didn't elaborate.

The lead delegates were the widow of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who engineered a "sunshine" engagement policy with the North and held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun, whose late husband had ties to the North.

Their meeting with Kim Jong Un could be intended to push South Korea to pursue previously agreed upon cooperative projects that would give North Korea much-needed hard currency, said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at Seoul-based University of North Korean Studies.

Footage from AP Television News in North Korea earlier showed the South Koreans being greeted by North Korean officials during a stop at a factory park in the North Korean border town of Kaesong. North Korea sent delegations to Seoul when the women's husbands died.

Monday's meeting appeared to be Kim Jong Un's first reported meeting with South Koreans since his father's death.

The Kim family has extended its control over the country of 24 million people to a third generation with Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was revealed last year as his father's choice among three sons for successor.

Kim Jong Il, who ruled North Korea for 17 years, wielded power as head of three main state organs: the Workers' Party, the Korean People's Army and the National Defense Commission. His father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, remains the nation's "eternal president" long after his 1994 death.

Kim Jong Un was named a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party last year, but was expected to ascend to new military and political posts while being groomed to become the next leader.

Monday's reference to his new title was in a commentary in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the mouthpiece of the Workers' Party, urging soldiers to dedicate their lives "to protect the party's Central Committee headed by respected Comrade Kim Jong Un." Rodong Sinmun has also called on the people to become "eternal revolutionary comrades" with Kim Jong Un, "the sun of the 21st century."

The language echoed slogans used for years to rally support for Kim Jong Il, and made clear that the son is quickly moving toward leadership of the Workers' Party, one of the country's highest positions, in addition to the military.

North Korea refers to Kim Il Sung as the "sun" of the nation, and his birthday is celebrated as the "Day of the Sun." State media have sought to emphasize Kim Jong Un's role in carrying out the Kim family legacy throughout his succession movement.

His titles are slight variations of those held by his father, but appear to carry the same weight. It was unclear whether the nation's constitution had been changed to reflect the transfer of leadership as when Kim Jong Il took power after his father's death.

Mourning continued, meanwhile, despite frigid winter weather, in the final days before Kim Jong Il's funeral, which is set to take place Wednesday, and a memorial Thursday.

People continued lining up Monday in central Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung Square, where a massive portrait that usually features Kim Il Sung has been replaced by one of Kim Jong Il, to bow before his smiling image and to lay funeral flowers. Heated buses stood by to give mourners a respite from the cold, and hot tea and water were distributed from beverage kiosks.

German Court Rules Muslim Student Disturbed the Peace by Praying (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in S?ddeutsche Zeitung.

(MUNICH) -- Yunus M., an 18-year-old Muslim high school student at Diesterweg Gymnasium in Berlin, Germany, has failed in his fight for the right to pray in the public corridors at school. The latest decision concerns this individual case only, judges at the Federal Administrative Court emphasized. But should the plaintiff, who is near graduation, opt to pursue the matter, the only further legal recourse open to him is the Federal Constitutional Court.

The question that the case raises, however, remains: should Muslim students be able to pray openly at school?

Four years ago, Yunus M. and seven friends gathered in the school corridor to bow in the direction of Mecca. The school's director forbid them to do it again, and the case went through a local court, then a court of appeal, before being heard at the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig. (See photos of Ramadan in the year of the Arab Spring.)

According to chief justice Werner Neumann, students have a fundamental right to pray at school. He said, however, that religious freedom has its limits if it threatens to cause social friction within the school, as was the case here. The court agreed with the position of the school, whose director stated that there had been repeated religious conflicts at the school, and that at an establishment where 90% of the students were not German it was impossible for them all to claim a right to pray there publically. In addition, the director stated, Yunus M. had been offered a space where he could pray privately.

A case-by-case issue?

The case had previously resulted in contradictory court decisions. In September 2009, the Berlin Administrative Court decided in favor of Yunus M., a ruling which the Administrative Appeals Tribunal overturned six months later.

The Berlin Administrative court called in jurist Matthias Rohe, an expert on Islam, who said that the Muslim boy's stance was a "plausible opinion in the spectrum of religious freedom" and that Yunus M. was not an extremist. The Appeals Tribunal called in a colleague of Rohe's, Tilman Nagel, who stated that even the prophet Mohammed had put off praying to make community life simpler.

Yunus M.'s case underscores a basic tension: Do state institutions have to accept strict, conservative, even fundamentalist practices when other interpretations are possible? (See the top 10 world stories of 2011.)

The Leipzig court avoided this debate by stressing the individual nature of its decision. For this the court earned praise from some Christian churches. Spokespersons for the Berlin-Brandenburg Evangelical Church and the Archdiocese of Berlin said the court's decision aligned with the freedom of religion guaranteed by the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Yunus M.'s lawyer said they were waiting for the written decision before deciding whether or not to go to the Supreme Court, a move he described, nevertheless, as unlikely.

Colo. man returns $10,000 found at Vegas airport

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. (AP) ? A Colorado man who found $10,000 before boarding a flight in Las Vegas says he returned the money to the owner because he wanted to show his children it was "the right thing to do."

Greenwood Village resident Mitch Gilbert told KUSA-TV he found two unmarked Caesar's Palace envelopes at the airport and realized there was money inside when he arrived home. The television station reported Monday (http://goo.gl/7aqpU ) that Gilbert called the airport and eventually got in touch with a man from El Paso, Texas, who reported the money missing.

Gilbert says he deposited the money in the man's bank account two days before Christmas. The man told the television station he won the money gambling and dropped it while running to catch a flight.

Mexican army: 'El Chapo' security head arrested

The Mexican army announced Sunday that it had captured the head of security for Sinaloa drug cartel head Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, one of the world's most wanted men.

The suspect, who was not identified by name, was captured in the Sinaloa state capital of Culiacan and will be presented to the media Monday morning, the army said.

Guzman, Mexico's top drug lord, is one of the world's richest men, and has eluded authorities by moving around and hiding since his 2001 escape from prison in a laundry truck.

The army said the man they had arrested also ran cartel activities in Durango and southern Chihuahua state, and was responsible for carrying out secret burials of cartel victims, kidnapping, extortion and arson. They did not say if the arrest moved the military closer to capturing Guzman, an arrest that would be seen as a major victory for the government of President Felipe Calderon.

Guzman is worth more than $1 billion, according to Forbes magazine, which has listed him among the "World's Most Powerful People." He has a $7 million bounty on his head, and thousands of law enforcement agents from the U.S. and other countries working on capturing him.

His cartel controls cocaine trafficking on the Mexican border with California and has moved eastward to the corridor between the Mexican state of Sonora, which borders Arizona.

Separately, Mexican soldiers discovered 13 bodies in an abandoned truck Sunday along with a message that they were killed in a war between rival drug cartels in the eastern state of Veracruz, officials said.

The bodies were found in Tamaulipas state, a few hundred yards (meters) from its border with Veracruz, according to the Tamaulipas attorney general's office. The office said that 10 of the bodies had been decapitated.

The area has been the scene of bloody battles between the Gulf and Zetas cartels, and a pair of banners alluding to a rivalry were found in the truck, the statement from the attorney-general's office said.

On Friday, the attorney general's office in Veracruz said it had found 10 bodies in a different area along the border with Tamaulipas after receiving a tip.

On Thursday, three U.S. citizens traveling to spend the holidays with their relatives in Mexico were among those killed in a spree of shooting attacks on buses. In the spree, a group of gunmen attacked three buses in Veracruz, killing a total of seven passengers.

The Americans killed were a mother and her two daughters who were returning to visit relatives in the region.

The five gunmen who allegedly carried out the attacks were later shot to death by soldiers.

Earlier, the gunmen also killed four people in the nearby town of El Higo, Veracruz.

Local police in Veracruz have become so corrupt that on Wednesday the government decided to dissolve the entire force in the state's largest city, also known as Veracruz, and sent the Navy in to patrol. Some 800 police officers and 300 administrative employees were laid off.

Apple iPod touch (3G) 8 GB

I've had my iPod Touch for over a year now. I have never had any issues with it and I use it every day. The battery life is quite good compared to the iPhone. If you turn it off when you are not using it, it can easily last 3 days, even if you use it quite often.

The picture quality is really good and the sound is excellent with headphones. However, if you don't have headphones in, it is quite quiet and not of the best quality.

It is quite heavy but very thin and comfortable to hold. It is very good looking, but the metal back does get scratched very easily, and I would recommend getting a silicon case for it. Be careful not to drop it because the screen does easily crack.

Compared to other MP3 players, this really does stand out. It is very quick and very responsive and it is great value for money. It has a very sleek and modern design and is definitely better looking than competing products.

You can download a variety of apps from the app store and music from iTunes. It is very easy to use and set up and the touch screen is very responsive. It has built in Wi-Fi which is very fast and great to use.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this to everyone. It's a great way to listen to music and play games!

Saffron Spice Fights Liver Cancer | Green Prophet

saffron flower, stamen anti-cancer, cancerResearchers in Al Ain find that saffron can protect your liver from cancer.

Great news just in time for Christmas: Arab scientists from the United Arab Emirates have located anti-cancer compounds in the much loved and expensive spice saffron. Known for centuries as a home remedy, the research project led by Professor Amr Amin from the United Arab Emirates University, Al Ain, found that saffron is able to suppress a large variety of cancer compounds. This news reported in the journal Hepetology, puts saffron in the ranks of cancer fighter along with another much-loved Asian spice, tumeric.

In the experiment on saffron, the researchers found that saffron is able to boost compounds in the body to help the body fight off cancer.?We are excited to learn more about the molecular aspects of how saffron works, we are strong believers that an immediate clinical trial [testing saffron in liver cancer patients] will benefit a wide spectrum of cancer patients not only in the UAE but worldwide as well,? Amin told the Gulf News.

The experiment used rats who were given liver cancer. A control group did not receive saffron, while an experimental group did. Seventy-five percent of the rats in the control group developed cancer, versus 16% in the saffron group which did not. Those rats that got the highest doses of saffron did not develop cancer nodules at all.

The researcher believes that the molecules in saffron can also fight off a range of cancers, and they are planning on revealing more research in this direction soon.

In the journal the researchers concluded: ?This study provides evidence that saffron exerts a significant chemopreventive effect against liver cancer through inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis. This report also shows some evidence that saffron protects rat liver from cancer via modulating oxidative damage and suppressing inflammatory response.?

Saffron, one of the most expensive spices on the market, comes from the stamen of the saffron flower. It is used in Arab and Central Asian cuisine, but its cancer-fighting properties have only been tested recently. Amin believes that it can also fightdepression, inflammation and memory loss.

Another Middle East wonder spice, saffron joins tumeric, and black cumin seeds (and oil) for potentially remarkable cancer-fighting properties. Now we just need a recipe that includes all three.

Iraq PM chides Sunni sections pushing for autonomy (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Iraq's prime minister warned Saturday that efforts to create an autonomous Sunni region within Iraq would divide the country and lead to "rivers of blood."

His comments came as a government crisis has strained ties between two main Muslim sects, Sunnis and Shiites, to the breaking point.

Nouri al-Maliki, the Shiite prime minister, is engaged in a showdown with the top Sunni political leader in the country. His government has issued an arrest warrant for Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi for what al-Hashemi says are trumped-up charges that he ran hit squads against government officials.

Since al-Maliki formed his government last December, minority Sunnis have been complaining of being marginalized by the Shiite-led government, prompting some Sunni provinces to call for turning into an autonomous region similar to the northern Kurdish region.

As an autonomous region, they would be able to conduct their own security affairs and have more independence in attracting investment. While the regions would still be part of Iraq, it would weaken Baghdad's control. Many worry that it would be the first step to breaking up the country along sectarian lines.

The calls have been repeatedly rejected by al-Maliki.

On Saturday, al-Maliki renewed his rejection to forming regions on a "sectarian basis," saying it would lead to "dividing Iraq and to rivers of blood."

"I can't reject this issue (forming regions) since it is allowed by the constitution," he told representatives from Sunni Salahuddin province, one of three Sunni-dominated provinces which has seen calls for more autonomy. Diyala and Anbar provinces have also seen cries for more autonomy.

"But doing it now means dividing Iraq on a sectarian basis while our country is unified," he said.

Tensions between minority Sunnis and Shiites have skyrocketed in recent days, laying bare an underlying mistrust that has never really gone away, despite years of effort to overcome it. Minority Sunnis fear the Shiite majority is squeezing them out of any political say, and Shiites suspect Sunnis of links to insurgency and terrorism.

Iraq's anti-American Shiite cleric, Muqtada al-Sadr, launched an initiative Saturday calling for peaceful coexistence among all Iraqis after the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country. The last soldiers left Dec. 18.

Al-Sadr, whose militiamen were blamed for sectarian killings during the worst years of Iraq's violence, is seeking to assert his political weight Iraq after the U.S. pullout.

Al-Sadr's proposal comes just two days after a terrifying wave of Baghdad bombings killed 69 people and wounded nearly 200. The bombs tore through mostly Shiite neighborhoods of the Iraqi capital, evoking fears the country could descend into a new round of sectarian violence.

Al-Sadr's associates handed out to the media a 14-point "peace code" proposal written by the radical cleric. It warns against spilling Iraqi blood and urges respect for all religions, sects and ethnic groups.

Al-Sadr's aide Salah al-Obeidi described the code as an attempt "to preserve the unity of the country and save it from fighting."

It remained too early to say how much traction al-Sadr's proposal could gain among Iraqis or the country' top leadership.

Also Saturday, two policemen were killed and two other people were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in Hawija, 150 miles (240 kilometers) north of Baghdad, said Kirkuk police commander Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir.

NHL notes: Briere joins injury parade

NHL notes: Briere joins injury parade
Flyers forward Daniel Briere in action against the Canadiens at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Que., Dec. 15, 2011. (MARTIN CHEVALIER/QMI Agency)

Report an error

The bad news is Danny Briere is injured.

The good news for the Philadelphia Flyers is it's not another concussion.

Briere, who has 10 goals and 15 assists this season, was out of the lineup Friday night because of a bruised hand, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said.
The 34-year-old forward was listed as day to day.

The Flyers have been hit hard by concussions this season, including captain Chris Pronger who is out for the season, and Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn who are currently sidelined. Leading scorer Claude Giroux has just returned to the lineup after missing four games with a concussion.

PANTHERS FEEL THE PAIN

The Florida Panthers could use a few days off -- they have had five forwards injured during the past four games.

The latest was Stephen Weiss, who sustained an upper-body injury Thursday against the Ottawa Senators when he collided with Chris Neil, knocking him out of a Friday night game against Boston.

Weiss joined Jack Skille (shoulder), Sean Bergenheim (groin), Mikael Samuelsson (tailbone) and Marco Sturm (possible concussion) among those who were injured in recent games. As well, Scottie Upshall and Marcel Goc have been on injured reserve with long-term injuries.

NAGGING INJURY FOR PEVERLEY

Boston Bruins forward Rich Peverley was taken out of the lineup for a game Friday against the Florida Panthers because of an undisclosed injury.

The Bruins want to give Peverley a break from an injury that he will have to cope with for the rest of the season, Bruins coach Claude Julien said Friday.

Peverley has six goals and 19 assists in 30 games.

"It's a little nagging injury that doesn't stop him from playing, but sometimes rest does a lot of good," Julien said.

BRIEFLY

The San Jose Sharks recalled Antero Niittymaki on Friday from the AHL, giving the Sharks three goalies on their roster. Niittymaki, who has been recovering from off-season hip surgery, joins fellow goalies Antti Niemi and Thomas Greiss ... Winger Martin Havlat visited the Sharks dressing room Friday, two days after surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left hamstring. He will be sidelined up to eight weeks.

Report: Russian spy chief joins nuclear missile firm

Russia's military intelligence chief has left his post at the helm of the country's biggest spying agency to join a company that develops nuclear missiles, Kommersant newspaper reported on Saturday.

Citing sources, Kommersant said General Alexander Shlyakhturov, who was appointed by President Dmitry Medvedev in April 2009, had left his role as head of GRU military intelligence service to head the board of OAO Korporatsiya MIT.

Known by its Russian acronym GRU, the military intelligence service has agents spread across the globe. It is so secretive that it does not have a spokesman or website. The Defense Ministry declined to comment.

Story: 'Russia will be free': Huge rally increases pressure on Vladimir Putin

Kommersant did not give a reason for Shlyakhturov's departure from GRU and it was not immediately clear if he had resigned or was merely being moved to keep a closer eye on the development of Russia's nuclear missiles, the cornerstone of Russia's defense capability.

Quality concerns
The failed launch of a military satellite which crashed into Siberia on Friday and a host of failures with a new generation, submarine-launched Bulava missile, has stoked concerns within the military about the quality of Russia's strategic missiles.

OAO Korporatsiya MIT develops missiles including the Bulava, which Russia test-fired successfully on Friday . Half of previous trials have failed.

Story: Who owns 69 Patriot missiles seized in Finland?

The top brass of GRU has opposed Kremlin-backed military reforms in the past, leading to the dismissal of Shlyakhturov's predecessor, General Valentin Korabelnikov.

However, Shlyakhturov is seen as an ally of Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, who has cut servicemen and reorganized the command structure of the armed forces.

The spy service, created in 1918 under revolutionary leader Leon Trotsky, answers to the chief of the general staff, one of the three people who control Russia's portable nuclear arsenal.

Unlike the Soviet-era KGB secret police, GRU was not split up when the Soviet Union collapsed.
